Well Im going to be trying something here soon and need a few questions answered.

I will be purchasing a bike soon as a form of cardio. Being its summer I like being outside and what better thing to do then bike and lose some weight. Would this be about the same like 45min biking as 45min cardio?

Or should I be going by miles? Im looking forward to this with summer being here. And the idea of losing a few pounds before my girlfriends wedding that I will be a bridesmaid for in september.

Any idea for biking?

Cardio in a gym for weight loss purposes makes sense if your heart rate is in the ideal training zone. It is usually more difficult to be in the training zone if you are riding your bike in the street because of traffic, and the ability to easily change speed compared to cardio in a gym where you have a monitor in front of you, and you have to push a button to change difficulty. So I find cardio in a gym better for weight loss but if you don't have the time/interest in going to a gym on a regular basis, then riding your bike is still a good idea.

Do you have a heart rate monitor? Do you know what your target heart rate is? It is (for women) 220-your age =what ever that answer is X .65 or .85(which indicates a moderate or higher percentage of your total maximum heart rate). My guess is that you will be probably training about 65% of your maximum heart rate and if you really enjoy bike riding, then maybe you could ride longer than 45 minutes. Is there a biking area in your neighborhood? A heart rate monitor is very good at determining your heart rate and calories burned, to help you reach your goals. If you aren't satisfied with your heart rate and calories burned ,then maybe you could bike ride for 30minutes as a good warm up, and jog/run for another 20-30 minutes. Just an idea, but a heart rate monitor would be a good idea. :)

there are plenty of areas around here for me to ride thats for sure. I do have an elliptical in my basement but would like to do an outdoor activity to help lose weight.

Granted on the rainy or cold days I can do stuff indoors. But summer is limited where I live and would like to enjoy it a bit while contributing to weight loss. More then 45min a day would be alright by me.

Go for it, as soon as the summer hits I like to take my cardio outside of the gym. So I'll do a lot of running, biking, jumprope, etc...all at the park.
