View Full Version : Hayfever affecting my lungs

Hi
Since having a couple of chest infecctions at the end of 2003 Ive been suffering from really bad hayfever which affects my lungs much more than my nose or eyes although I do get bad symptoms there too. From the start of the hayfever season I haven't been able to breathe without antihistamines, and now I think the oil seed rape season has started and my breathing is so much worse even with antihistamines. Im also taking becotide but it doesn't seem to be helping.
Is there anything I can do to help my lungs overcome this sensitivity? Does anyone else suffer in the same way and what do you do to treat it?

Best wishes

Hi Tess....how much of the Becotide are you taking? It's possible that the antihistamine might be causing some of the difficulty breathing, what if you changed it?

Another option might be for you to use something like Pulmicort, a rescue inhaler before you use it (during this recent reaction time), and maybe Singulair?

Have you been diagnosed with asthma?
What antihistamine are you using?

Is it possible that you have another chest infection as well?

I hope you're able to get relief soon.

Hi Quincy
Thanks for the reply.
Im taking 2 puffs twice a day of 100mg - so 400 mg a day at the moment. Thats also a recent increase. Ive had loads of tests and I dont have asthma, or exercise induced asthma, but I am now wondering if I have allergy asthma. I have tested my peak flow readings and I can still get very good readings.

I didn't think that the anihistamine could cause breathing difficulty, Im taking zyrtec/cetirizine. I will try a different one or could it be a class effect?

I will take my rescue med before taking the becotide.

Im not really coughing anything up and my peak flow readings haven't really changed, would that rule out a chest infection?

Thanks for your help, sorry to bombard you with information!
Best wishes
