i am 32 yoa and have been on disability for about 16 months. i am scheduled to have an artificial disc replacement on july 5th. my back pain was severe for a year and now my buttocks and hip hurt me so bad that i don't sleep at night. no matter what i do, i am in so much pain. my hydrocodone or percocet that i take doesn't work at all. i have started taking so many meds that i feel guilty but i just want a little relief. i take five hydro's at a time and it doesn't help hardly at all. i know its almost over with surgery on its way. is it common for the nerves to make your hip and buttocks hurt so bad. it is definately disabling. i can't do anything. my leg hurts to but not as bad as the others. this is the worst pain ever and nothing helps. anyone have any ideas to get some relief so i don't have to take to many meds. thanks, jason.

I too had this butt hip pain after surgery and it is terribly painful. I know.
What helped me was water walking in the pool and doing some arm stretches to stretch out the middle back.
For some reason, after two sessions in the pool, just walking 12 laps, I got out and my hip/butt pain had let up considerably. Now if I miss the pool, the pain starts up again.
Really, other than ice, the pool has helped the most with that. You don't need an exercise sheet or PT. Just go to the pool and walk slowly in the shallow end during lap swim time. Don't do too much at first, maybe just 6 - 8 laps, as the water works you out more than on land and you won't feel it right away in the water.
I think the water almost acts as a massage. The water also supports the body. But for me, water walking eases that pain every time. I can pop pain pills and they won't touch it much but the water will.
