Hello

I have some questions regarding my daughter. The school has contacted me 2-3 times over the last few months regarding her drinking, washroom more frequent and just the last two day she is complaining of feeling funny. Head feels funny and yesterday an upset tummy, she is also very emotional. Now I have been testing her blood sugar levels since yesterday (6/13) and they are 1:41pm 7.7 mmol/l; 7:52pm 9.6 mmol/l and this morning (6/14) at 7:14am 4.7 mmol/l; 8:17am 5.2 mmol/l; 12:00pm 8.9 mmol/l. I am just wondering is this something I should be concerned about. But now that she is home had some juice she seems to be fine. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and God Bless.

The symptoms you described sound like they could indicate diabetes but I'm pretty sure the numbers you posted for her blood sugar are in normal range. I'm more familiar with the whole numbers but the morning numbers are the ones I'd look at the most closely and the first one was under 5, which is a good normal number. The others, during the day, could be elevated because of what she's eaten or had to drink, and they don't look that high anyway.

But...if the school has noticed a change in her behavior then it's worth looking into. There's all kinds of things that could be causing what she's doing...including stress...so maybe it's best to take her to a doc and rule out a few things. Diabetes and celiac are the first things I'd want ruled out but, like I said, the numbers look pretty normal for diabetes. Good luck.

Her morning numbers are fine, but her mid-day numbers, especially the 9.6 and 8.9 are a just a bit high. You didn't mention how long after she had eaten those numbers were taken, or what she had eaten prior to those tests, so it's hard to tell if they're truly high or just a reflection of a more normal rise based on what she had eaten and how long after the meal it was.

Some other factors to consider: If she has recently had some sort of cold or virus, it could be that she is at the beginning stages of Type 1. If she's overweight, it could be the beginning stages of Type 2. On the other hand, it could be a total anomoly, and she may start feeling fine within a week or so. If, however, she does not improve within a week, I'd definitely make an appointment with her doctor to check this out.
