During my TRUS biopsy yesterday my urologist remarked that my prostate was very large for my age (48). It measured 69.9 cc. He didn't tell me what 'normal' is overall or for my age. The nurse who had said 'You'll pee before you leave here' changed her statement after the measurement to 'you're probably one of those who won't be able to pee until a few hours from now' - based on the size of my prostate and the expected swelling from the trauma of the biopsy. I peed 20 minutes after the test, had no trouble the rest of the day and still have seen no blood in my urine.

But back to size - I've found on the net statements like 'normal size is 20-25 cc' and 'the average size for those with PC is 40 cc'. Is that right?

What could my 69.9 cc size mean?

I'm sorry to barge in and ask so many questions but 3 times larger than normal is not what I expected to hear about my PG. I know he said 'very large' but 3 X + ???

Well I'm not an expert, but before you get yourself too alarmed, I'd ask your urologist and await your biopsy results. I know its hard when all of this is thrown at you at first to not rush to the internet and research all you can. While the information is wonderful tool, sometimes it can cause is more grief than necessary when we are without all the facts (i.e. your results).

From my understanding (and please anyone leap in and correct me if I"m wrong ) but a large prostate or "enlarged" prostate could be cause by an infection, and it could be another sign of prostate cancer. I am sure there may be other explainations, or just simply that is your size by nature. Of course you won't know these answers until you see your doctor, but I hope this clarifies somethings for you at least a bit. I am sure others here with their own personal experience scan lend a bit more clarity.

Thanks Bullun - I had no real idea what normal was and when I found out it really stunned me. Descriptions I saw were 'size of a walnut' and I didn't know how to relate that to cubic centimeters.

I mentioned in the other thread about my biopsy experience that the Urologist hypothesized that a 69.9 cc prostate could produce a 4.7 and 4.3 PSA result without any cancer being present, so that's kind of reassuring (if it's true or just his educated guess).

It'll be a long time until next Tuesday afternoon........thanks for the support. I've gone from totally taking my PG for granted to knowing more than I ever knew existed about it. I'd rather worry about the Reds......

Hi James I know the wait until your results come in can be grulling but take a deep breath and try to stay calm. My husband and I went thru this in Oct of 04 and he had a total in March. His psa was 4 and his gleason score was 5. He is doing great he is back to work and has run three miles twice. He had some leaking but it has now stopped. It sounds like your doctor is doing the right thing. Just try to stay calm until you know what is going on with your biopsys. Thanks geifer - I'm glad he's doing well 3 months post-total. Gruelling is definitely the word - I'll take lots of deep breaths between now (Wed 6/15) and my results appointment (Tues 6/21).

I used to run - maybe I'll try to get back to 3 miles no matter which way the results end up - for my good and in honor of you and your husband. How can I complain when he's able to go that far? I wish you all the best.

The more people who respond to me here make me realize I'm not in a vacuum - it's like a virtual handholding and I appreciate it. No matter what my outcome I'll stay around here and continue in the community since I'm likely facing at the very least regular PG biopsies and some type of treatment for my enlarged PG.

Prostate enlargement can have a benign cause. I know a man with a very large prostate, who has now had two biopsy procedures, with no sign of tumors or abnormal cells. The fact that he has done this twice means that the chance of a "false negative" is down around 10%. I had a very large prostate, which turned out to contain two small tumors and a lot of abnormal (PIN) cells distributed throughout. So, I had a prostatectomy, and it looks like the cancer was well contained in this very large prostate that was removed. The advice to do your best to stay calm until you have more info is really the best approach. Hang in there. If the biopsy is positive, I'd suggest reading Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer, as it is very helpful in making an informed decision about treatment.

I'm sorry you had PC and your PG removed but I'll root for an outcome like the man you know. Thanks for the tip on the book - If I'm positive Tuesday I'll own the book by Wednesday.

james_wv-maybe I missed it, but were you having any problems urinating, voiding completely or running to the bathroom a lot?

Sorry, reading further I see you've had no problems. Such problems would be a sign of BPH or infection. It should be safe now to "check your semen".
