Could people let me know which machine they have found to be a more effective weight loss tool, the elliptical or the treadmill?

A couple of months ago I read in either Flex or M&F that treadmill is more effective.

I haven't done a side by side comparison, but I can vouch that I *like* the elliptical better. Plus I think you work your leg muscles a little harder since it can create higher inclines than a treadmill.

i'm gonna put in a vote for the treadmill. i'm basing that on how tired and 'worked out' i feel after going on them for the same amount of time. treadmill wins every time

But the elliptical burns way more calories in a health magazine I read months ago. You are working your arms as well as your legs, glutes, etc...Teadmill is mainly legs.

I've tried both machines, and the one I have stuck with is the treadmill. My first purchase was the treadmill, and I used it faithfully. I then purchased an elliptical thinking it would be a better workout for my entire body. I remember it being a lot harder to stay on it for too long. I gradually started to dread thinking about working out on it, so it became a clothing rack.
I never feel that way about my treadmill though. I've got mine set up overlooking the backyard with a big fan blowing on me. I make my own workout cd's and blast the music.
I've gradually worked up from walking on a flat incline to now a moderate incline. I walk briskly for 30 minutes a day which is 2 miles. I use 2 lb hand weights and swing my arms which makes a huge difference.
To tone up my stomach, I use a cardiotrainer machine. I've also began doing squats with buttocks squeezing which is really tightening up my butt fast.
In my opinion and from stories I've read, the treadmill is a machine that people tend to stick with...I've had mine for about 6 years and still love it!
Hope this helps!

i love the elliptical, i'm not a fan of the treadmill though just because i can go outside and walk. The elliptical seems to work my legs harder(when i first started i felt worn out after 8mins, after a couple more times i was going an hour and loving it) it also tends to burn calories faster for me since i dont like running and dont push myself on the treadmill as much. Hope you find what works best for you!

This is just my opinion but I would have to say the elliptical machines. I think treadmills are great, but they are boring after a while. The best treadmills are the ones that can go for a good incline so you can mix it up from walking on flat track, walking up a hill, and jogging and running.
But, I like the elliptical machines because they burn more calories, are lower impact, and are a lot more fun to ride. Plus, you are using more of your total body.
I bought the Tony Little Power Plus glider a while back and I love it. It's a great machine, really sturdy, a heck of a lot of fun, and challenging. Riding it never gets old and the more you ride it the more you want to. It's cool. Think about it too.

I prefer the elliptical. To me, it's far more interesting and the best part is I burn more than twice the calories in the same amount of time. :)

Since I have osteo/bad hip, I purchased an elliptical last Nov. I also started on the Dr. Phil Ultimate Weight Solution. I went from 146 to 122 in 5 months. I also lost quite a few inches on waist/hips/thighs. Since there is less stress on the elliptical, I quit using the treadmill. I really feel that the elliptical is best, based on my experience.

ELLIPTICAL!!! I used to be a long distance runner and then I used a treadmill for a few years, but I much prefer an elliptical.
Here are all the advantages to using an elliptical:
1) It works your upper body whereas a treadmill only works your lower body.
2) It provides resistance which is good if you want to strengthen bones and preserve muscle mass. Running tends to make you lose muscle more easily.
3) You can go in reverse.
4) You can squat down and target different muscles in your legs.
5) If you buy one, it's easier to maintain (No motor, no deck to lubricate).
6) It will make you firmer. I ran for years but it wasn't until after I started using the elliptical that people starting giving me complements on my butt.
7) If you want to have one at home, it makes less noise than a treadmill.
8) An elliptical is less stressful on your joints. I kept getting shin splints from running which is why the elliptical is great for me.
Someone earlier complained that it was harder to use than a treadmill. Well, isn't that the point? Exercise is supposed to be hard. If it were easy, it wouldn't be as effective. I don't know which burns more calories. I just know that I feel like I accomplished more when I use the elliptical compared to a treadmill. If you're really worried about burning a lot of calories, try a rowing machine.

For me I think the elliptical is the better choice for weight loss. Of course anything you do is good, but i found that when I started the elliptical my legs got way more defined and I started to lose faster.
