I was eating a soft mint and a piece of enamel chipped off the corner of my top front tooth. I just went to the dentist for a cleaning back in December. It doesn't hurt but I'm worried it will cause future damage. Does anyone have any input?!

Have your dentist look at it and see if there's a problem. Sometimes you can chip a tootk from the wrong forces placed inthe wrong directions. You probably bit into something hard at one point in time that actually cracked the enamel, but it stayed in place - like a piece of glass that has a crack, but is still together. Then something softer and stickier pulls it apart. If the tooth fractured due to excessive force and is not giving you any discomfort and is a small piece, your dentist may be able to simply smooth it off for you. If the piece broke because there was a filling in the tooth and the enamel was unsupported, you may need a crown. If there was decay that undermined the enamel, you'll probably need a filling or crown.

If it's not bothering you in any way, you can probably leave it as is. If it's rough, your dentist can always file it a little. However, if it bothers you to look at, the dentist can bond it. I had this done to the inside corner of one of my front teeth. I was eating an apple and a tiny piece of my inside tooth came off. The dentist bonded the chip and you can't even tell that there was ever a chip there.
