Hihi,

Kinda posting for my girlfriend, I know some kind of definitive answer will reassure her so much.

Anyway! Condom split on us on Friday night, and we'd seen a doctor and she'd taken the MAP within about 10 hours. It was her first time of taking *any* kind of contraceptive.

Anyway! She didn't feel very sick, which was a massive relief. But today she's found herself bleeding - heavy - to the point of wondering whether she's starting her period.

However! She'd only just come off practically on the Thursday/Friday before the *incident*. So it'd be a bit of a shock for it to be this soon (literally a week after coming off); but she says the blood is very red - rather than the usual colour - which in my head makes sense. But the side-effects for the MAP including "spotting".

From some brief-interweb-research I've learnt that the sudden influx of hormones of the first time of taking a contraceptive pill can make your body "over-react" to it, but we'd still like to make sure.

So! Is it normal to bleed quite heavily a little under a week of your first-time of taking the MAP? And could it be her period starting really early? And if so (and this is more trivia that facinated us) will it be this time from now-on?

We just want to make sure; we know through taking the pill so quickly that it's very unlikely that they'd be a pregnancy - but we still obvious want to make sure. So if this is her period, and we don't know, then it could be a panic when the regular time comes.

Thanks!

In my opinion, the ECP has brought on her period early. It is known to do that, or just generally mess up your cycle (although not everyone has this reaction).

And since it is not a 'natural' period, that could be why it is not the same as she's used to. If she calls her doctor I'm sure that's what (s)he'd say.

But, if she's also in a lot of pain though, then maybe it's something else. How's the pain situation compared to her regular periods?

As for her cycle from here on, it could be erratic, it could continue as regular, no idea.

I asked if she was getting cramping or any pain, and she said she wasn't. She does get cramps usually! I guess this a good sign? From what she's saying it's like; she's bleeding but it doesn't feel like a period.

Will she still get her normal period or will it come much later (as in - normal-length after "this one")? I'm just worried she'll panic around the time so want to find out now, way-ahead-of-time.

First off I just wanted to say it's very commendable that you're doing research to reassure your girlfriend. :)

Your girlfriend's period may be right "on time" or it might be late. Unfortunately there isn't really any way to tell until the time comes. But if she is late, reassure her that being late following taking the morning after pill is completely normal. Since you got the morning after pill so soon after the condom broke, the chances of her being pregnant are much less then they'd be had you waited. Good for you two for acting so responsibly! :)

For the time being, just try to reassure your girlfriend that the fact she's experiencing a period-like flow is a good sign, provided it isn't exceptionally heavy or painful and it doesn't sound as though it is.

the morning after pill is doing what it is suppose to. IT gives you your period. I think the point is to make your body do the cycle and flush anything out that may have happened ya know what im saying?

The morning after pill is just a high dose of hormones. It will not flush out an embryo if it has implanted in the uterine wall and a woman is pregnant.

The morning after pill doesn't force a cycle, what happens is after taking it, a woman's hormone levels drop after a few days or so, and she has a withdrawl bleed. Just like when a woman is on the pill. The dropping hormone levels make it so the uterine lining begins breaking down, and then the woman bleeds.
