Im 16 years old and my mom took me to a gyno just today for bad backaches and other stuff i had while on my period so she prescribed me the birthcontrol estrostep. Ive been all over these boards reading terrible things about this pill and im soo scared to start it but i feel like i have no choice. Does anyone have any expirience using this pill? Any advice for a first time user??? I seriously need some advice.....

hi ragdoll. my dr put me on estrostep when i first started taking the pill as well. i took it for 4 months but this month i started a new pill - ovcon 35 - only because i kept on having breakthrough bleeding on estrostep. breakthrough bleeding doesnt happen to everyone though...some pills just arent right for some people. i really wanted the estrostep to work for me though. besides the breakthrough bleeding, i really loved being on it! that was the only negative side effect i had. before starting, i had super heavy periods that lasted about 6-7 days & terrible cramps that kept me in bed with a heating pad & muscle relaxants for the fist 1-2 days of my period each month. my actual periods on estrostep lasted only 1-3 days and they were so light that i could use just a panty liner or a junior absorbancy tampon (big switch for doubling up on super plus tampons & overnight pads)! and they were cramp-free! my initial period was a little bit longer however, it lasted 10 days. in the beginning i had some soreness in my breasts, but nothing too bad. so as i said, the only problem i had was the breakthrough bleeding & that doesnt happen to everyone. i never had naseau, headaches, moodiness etc. so give it a try...chances are it will help with your backaches & whatnot. and if you dont like it, you can always give your dr a call & have the pill switched to something else. just keep in mind that it can take a few months for your body to fully adjust to taking the pill. good luck to you!!

True, not everyone reacts the same to a given pill. But...BUYER BEWARE! I was on this pill for just over two years. I had hair loss, weight gain and depression. I used to have very thick hair so I didn't notice the hair loss until about a year into it. I was hoping it would stop. It didn't, at least not until I stopped taking it. But, my hair is still much thinner than before. I had a weight gain of 15 lbs. in 5 months due to an increased appetite. However, I was exercising regularly  It wasn't muscle either, I had to buy bigger clothes. I lost the weight after my appetite went down. Also, I was depressed one week before my period each month like clockwork. I didn't experience this before going on this pill. One positive, my periods were shorter (4 days) and not much cramping as I recall. This wasn't my first time on the pill. Prior to that I was on Desogen. It killed my sex drive so I switched Estrostep, obviously a bad decision on my part. But you may be different, just watch that hair loss! :) Just do plenty of research before you start it. Oh, and don't feel like this is your only option. There are plenty of other pills out there! Sorry such a long post, hope I was helpful.

Although I've never been on it myself, I've read really bad stuff about Yasmin, and for that reason I wouldn't go on it if you paid me. I'm talking things like severe depression, panic attacks, anxiety, blood clots, etc. You might try Ovcon-35 instead, that's what I'm on. The only major thing that's happened to me so far (7 months) is a little weight gain. I've recently lost the lbs., though, since I don't have the raging appetite thing anymore. Everybody's different, but I think it's one of the better ones out there and worth a try. Good luck! :)

It looks like your getting alot of negative responses. Well I have been on the pill for almost 4 yrs. I started on Ortho Tri Cyclen and I hated it. Then I went to Alesse and I was on that for a long time. I really liked it and I had no problems except for some weight gain. That is one thing about the pill if you are going to be on it you have to watch what you eat and exercise. Which is good for you anyway then I got off the Alesse for 3 months and decide to go back on the pill (new boyfriend). I took Ortho tri cyclen lo and hated that too. Then my Gyno. wanted to try Yasmin. So now I have been on Yasmin for almost 4 months and no problems! I like it and I have really never had any problems w/ any of these pills besides weight gain. The pill can be a great thing! Don't let all the negative stuff get you down it doesn't happen to everyone! Just remember what it is really for. To protect you from having a little bundle of joy before your ready!

Raggdoll - When I was 19 I started Estrostep because my periods were still so irregular, I wasnt sexually active then so I didnt have to worry about the pregnancy aspect.
But anyway, I had no problem with Estrostep! I had the usual spotting, but even then, it was only in the first week of using it. and it was very light. And it DEFINITELY regulated my periods. I didnt gain any weight. It didnt make my skin any better, but it didnt make it worse either. I never lost any hair. The ONLY thing i remember - on the 3rd week of pills on the highest dose of hormone, once in a while id feel a little light headed, or Id get a headache. But it was never anything severe, nothing to worry about. Also, the first month on it, I was a little moody, but that evened itself out.
I stopped taking it because I started smoking, and my blood pressure was too high. ive since stopped smoking, and now I am about to start Mircette tomorrow, im hoping it will give good results!
But estrostep was the jump start I needed to have regular periods, because they predictable after I stopped the pill... oh yeah, I was on Estrostep for 9 cycles, and I didnt experience any side effects from stopping the pill either.

Now, again, this is me. Other people have had bad experiences with it. But I just wanted to let you know there are people here who it worked for :)

It's impossible to say with any certainty how you will react to taking any given pill. Every woman is different, and unfortunately, the only way to see whether or not you will have side effects is to take it and see.

The reason there are so many different formulations of the birth control pill is that no one formulation works for every woman. What may be wonderful for one women may be horrible for another. If ever they find a "universal" formulation for the birth control pill, wherein no one gets negative side effects, the other formulations will disappear and everyone will be on the same "magic" pill. Until then however, all that can be done is to try different pills until you find one that works for you.

Try not to worry too much, however -- Estrostep may well work wonderfully for you, and your doctor knows your medical history and as such probably made a very educated guess when he/she prescribed it for you.
