View Full Version : Does Anyone Know This Kind Of Pain

About a week ago, my father said he went to fall and somehow pulled back his whole body weight to prevent the fall. This resulted in a very penetrating pain from his big toe up until his ankle. It turned red and a bit swollen. It lasted about a week. My brother gave him some cream (that he uses every time he gets a sore shoulder from lifting weights) and it seemed to work.

Today, a week later, he's complaining of similar pain in the opposite leg but around the knee. He says the knee isn't swollen but he's in a lot of pain. He oversees construction sites so he's not into doing too much "labor" work, but is in work boots all day.

For about a year & a half he has had some problems with his sugar, ranging between 80 and 135. Could this pain have anything to do with his sugar or BP? He's 60 years old.

Hi Hope :)

First off, how is your son doing?

Secondly, I am not an expert but what you seem to be describing is gout. Usually gout affects the big toe and causes swelling. My brother-in-law had this and it will come and go and I think there is meds for it.

But again, I really do not know for sure. I do not believe it to be blood pressure related.

Hi,

I think you have confused me with someone else - no children here (or at least not yet anyway :)

Thank you I think you are right. I looked it up & my father's symptoms are very similar to these of gout. I really hope it's not serious. He is trying to control his weight too. I'll let him know.

Thanks again :)

Hope,
That lead from Sumper is a good one...my first thought also: GOUT.
He needs to have his serum Uric Acid checked. If it is above 6.0 gout becomes suspect; at 7 in the presence of foot pain it's almost a dead cert and with an 8 or higher, it's GOUT. Ignore the reference guidlines, they are set too high to have much meaning.

The treatment for an acute attack is an ancient drug made from crocuses: COLCHICINE. It is dirt cheap and really diagnostic because it cures no other kind of pain but will stop gout pain in 24 hours. Daily ALLOPURINOL will keep uric acid levels low and he need never suffer another attack (6-7 years since my last one.)

If it's NOT gout it might be a set of sprains or arthritis...they can be illusive.
