I'd go with psyllium.

Psyllium is a bulk-forming laxative, which means it works just by expanding in water and forming a larger, softer stool. It is perfectly safe to use long term and some doctors even recommend using it regularly as an extra source of fiber. It's what's in Metamucil.

Cascara is a stimulant laxative which means it stimulates peristalsis. It is relatively mild among stimulant laxatives, but it can still cause cramps and you shouldn't use it long-term or you can lose muscle tone in your colon.

As a side note, psyllium has a taste and texture so disgusting that it makes me gag. Maybe it's just me. But personally I'd recommend psyllium in capsule form instead of as a powder.

Sorrel2--Thanks!! A friend of mine mentioned that we need to do a colon cleansing at least 2x a year which I have never done before. I've been doing some research and these seemed like the mildest form to take for a week is Psyllium husk or Cascara instead of Oxyclean, Ultimate Cleanser and other brands that come up when I google colon cleansing. I want something that is mild and does a "colon cleansing" at the same time.

How long should one take psyllium husks can they be taken as part of a normal diet?
