I would be forever grateful for those w/ MS to describe their leg pain. I do not mean the numb-tingling...I mean the throbbing pain.
Those w/ leg pain, please send your input as to where the pain is, which side, how far down the leg and if anything seems to trigger the pain to be worse or better.
Thank you so much,

Hi One Cent L..
I have had the leg pain off and on. Most recently, it has been the backs of both thighs cramping. I have also had deep, seemingly to-the-bone pain in both calves. These are not leg "cramps," they are entirely different and more painful, even waking me at night.
I have recently begun having deep pain in the sides of my thighs.
Don't really know what brings it on. I've been taking it easy because of the summer heat, so I don't think it is over-exertion OR heat. I have had these pains in the dead of winter also. My internist suggested secondary fibromyalgia.

Hi, the leg pain that I get feels like I have been on my feet all day and I havent been. Its hard to describe but feels like they are hard as a rock and cant bend them. I know that sounds strange but they hurt real bad also. I am glad you aksed the question because I was wondering about that also.

I am glad for all the feedback, and yes, it's these kinds of questions that are good for support. When one goes to the internet or other resourses to research if this pain or that pain is "Normal", all that can be found is "medical" reviews which are so cut and dry. The symptom lists are narrowed down to mostly "tingling-pins and needles" feelings in the legs (and arms, etc), therefore if dull, aching, or sharp pains show up one begins to wonder "is this a symptom? or could it be something else?"
Thanks for all the descriptions.
Keep them coming.

One-Cent, What does you leg pain feel like? Have you been diagnosed with MS? I havent been yet but I have 9 lesions on MRI. My spinal was clean though, so really dont know yet. Follow up MRI in a year uggggh. All this waiting, is hard.

No, I haven't been diagnosed yet. I have had symptoms for years and a questionalbe MRI over 10 years ago. Another MRI last week and was referred to a neurologist...so I will know more next week. The leg pain is odd. In fact I have traveled form gynocologist to GI due to the pain since it starts so high up--groin/vaginal/bottocks lower left pelvicn region. Strange sounding? But the horrible throbbing reaches down my left leg and pretty much stops at around the back of my knee. A couple of Alieve helps me to sleep with only several wake-ups a night...but at least I can sleep some.
Anyhow...it may be totally unrelated to all of my other symptoms.
Thanks for asking and good luck to you. It's horrible to have to wait from year to year, isn't it? It's a process of elimination, huh?
CMV?
Eptein Barr?
Eshophogus abmormalities?
Old-age failing eyesight?...blurry vision..but WHY?
Chronic Fatigue?
Fibromayalgia?
Clumbsiness?
Trigeminal Nueralgia?
Migraines?
Fatigue due to age???? Doing too much???
Psycho?
It's awful to just not have an "answer". The not knowing what in the world is wrong (and what will hit next) is one of the most horrible side-effects, isn't it?

Leg Pain?? U Mean Deep Tissue Pain From The Hip To Toes? Sometimes So Intense Your Feet Feels Like They're Bare And Your Walking On Burning Coals? Sometimes A Cramping Sensation And I Cant Even Move.
Not My Most Intense Pain Though. It Is From My Skull To My Spine. I Feel Like There's A Lil Man With A Hammer And A Nail Running From The Top Of My Skull To My Lower Spine, Back And Forth And Like He Doesnt Want To Stop.

I have the same thing as some of the others. DEEP to the bone pain. Mainly in my calves and it hurts SO freaking bad. It just aches and aches and there is nothing that releives the pain, nothing. I'm on Neurotin, Pamelor, Topamax and they don't even touch the pain. They help the burning on fire going up in flames :blob_fire feeling in my thigh though, that is mostly relieved by the Neurotin, I take 900mg 3x a day.
I hope you get to feeling better and that you can get an answer to your sx soon.
Be Well.

Hi one cent L,
This leg pain thing is completely different for me than the last posts. I have had it quite alot in back of one leg from top to bottom also the same sort of pain in my wrist and hip bone. It's almost like tooth ache, a sharp, deep nerve sort of thing, if u know what I mean. Its really hard for me to explain. I've read alot about cramping but I can say i've only had that a few times and its not so bad as the nerve thing.
I hope the pain you are having is under control and stays that way.

Donnalynne....I am probably going to spell this wrong..maybe someone else can correct me...but maybe the pain you describe is caused by the sciatic?sciatica? nerve being pinched or compressed...? I have had that problem, too..and it runs down the back of the leg and into the hip just as you described. I don't believe it is an MS thing per se...you might ask your doctor. Hi one cent L,

The sciatic nerve is literally as big around as your finger, so it's easily pinched by the bones of the low back. As well, there is a muscle group that attaches at the INSIDE of your hip bone and snakes down through the bones to attach to your femur, or thigh bone. Ilio-psoas, I think. It's the muscle that helps you walk and can be VERY painful if it's tight or infllamed. If it's THAT, you could go to a massage therapist that knows how to treat it with deep tissue massage. They literally "dig" or work their fingers alongside the front of your hip and under the intestines down to that muscle on the bone. It takes a lot of patience to relax the muscles, so you really need to find an experienced therapist.

My MS manifested itself with severe muscle craps, Charlie horse left leg (Calf and thigh) and left arm (Bicep). Sometimes up to 10 a day. With esach repitiion it became more painful because the uscle was sore. The diabilitating ones have stopped since Rebif. Now I get bad cramps in my calfs, both at night a few times a week. Started taking Yoga. Something I never thought that i would say. But the intensisty of pain is less. I am meeting with my neuro in a couple of weeks I am going to talk to him about the pain. May even see if I can get something to rlax. I was taking quinine and it worked great. Really scared about wheel chair. I had thought that people with MS and in a wheel chair is because they have loss the use of their legs. Not Pain. I guess that is something that I need to ask on this board. I
Best of luck.
Doug

Penny, I'm only at "possible", so hadn't posted up to now. However I've had trouble with my sciatic nerve for several years. When it really flares up it wakes me many, many times at night. It seems to start at the small of my back, goes across my buttocks over my hips, then wraps around my thighs, most of the time ending at my knees (unless really bad, when it goes down to my feet). Walking is SOOO painful, standing is worse, sitting sucks, laying down is only good for a bit. I did physical therapy, chiropractor and massage (although she wasn't the best, Lisa!) with no relief at all. The interesting thing to me is that when I developed L'Hermittes the "electric shock" sensation traveled down my spine and followed the same path down my legs. I guess that proves only that my nerves are in the same place they've always been!
As MS is dx'd via elimination, thought I'd try to give you my best effort explanation of sciatica! Hang in there.

Sciatica is very common. The sciatic nerve is pinched as it emerges from the lumbar vertebrae. This is a bone pinching the nerve. Also, carpal tunnel-like pain can be caused by a compressed nerve in your shoulder (in the hollow above your collar bone at the neck). And tennis elbow-like symptoms can come from a nerve that is compressed by the pectoralis minor (in front of your armpit). These last two are from muscles contracting around the nerve.

Thanks to you all for the input. I have been looking into the Sciatica-thing. It sure sounds as if it could be that. I have an appt with my Neuro on Tuesday and then I thought I'd check into seeing what a chiropractor could do. Any input on that route?
The bummer of the Scaitica thing is that there are not too many roads to relief, huh?
Mine seldom stops hurting, but the pain does get much worse at some times then others. Drivihg is a pain (literally). Thank God I am limber since it seems that turning and re-positioning my by left leg and hip does seem to help while driving. Bending over seems to trigger pain (as in taking clothes out of the dryer) as does traveling upstairs.
Walking for exercise used to be an everyday way of life for me. Now walking down my driveway to retrieve my newspaper is a task I avoid.
Sound familiar?
Does that dreaded Sciatica-thing ever go away or what?
Thanks a million,
Penny

Penny, mine at first seemed it would never end, but eventually (almost a year) it went away. It comes and goes now. When it starts to come back I look for things I might be doing to cause it. I've noticed that driving seems to impact it: I now try so sit up (when I have electric seats, I raise the seat up as far as I can), and I try to keep my left leg in the same position as my right leg.
And I have to confess, the initial bout only ended after I had a traumatic blow to my back and hip - I was rear-ended on my motorcycle, by a truck. Not a therapy I'd recommend, but I think it sort of fast-forwarded the chiropractic stuff I had begun!
And yes, steps can be horrible, even stepping up onto a curb. But yes, it CAN GO AWAY!

A medical doctor is going to put you on pain killers and into traction if s/he thinks that will help. A chiropractor will try to relieve the pressure by manipulating the bones that are pinching. They are basically two different ways of treating the same thing and a "never the twain shall meet" sort of thing because the chiropractic and medicine are mostly incompatible philosophies. That is starting to change but the medical establishment will only view chiropractic as a supplemental therapy, whereas chiropractic schools teach that it is a complete alternative to medicine. When I lived in Texas, I was going to a college chiropractic clinic where I was treated by final year students. I was extremely lucky to get an intern who treated my MS with chirpractic instead of just giving me spinal adjustments. He did neurological testing every visit. Because MS is a neurological problem, and real chiropractic treats the neurologic system FIRST, I never felt better in my life! Unfortunately, I moved away and could only find your run-of-the-mill chiropractor who only treated the misalignments in my back, which provides temporary relief at best. If you find a chiropractor who had a strong philosophical knowledge base, you'll get more out of it. Unfortunately, a lot of chiropractors are out there to make money and that's it.

I have leg pain that seems to move between my calf's and thighs. It can be in both or one at a time. Sometimes one calf and the other thigh. There really is no rime or reason to it. My pain has been a cramp combined with shooting pains. I has gotten now to the point it is almost constant. And as of yet have found nothing to relieve the pain.
I am sorry you are in pain. Hope that someone will have an answer.
