View Full Version : losing breath quickly

I am a 22 year old female and I am athletic and enjoy working out but I have a problem with my breathing.
When I try to run around a quarter mile track I can make it around about half way before I have to walk due to losing my breath.

Is there any techniques to help me breathe "correctly" when I run so I can get a more effective workout without having to stop every couple of minutes?

thanks

How long have you been running? You may need to bulid up your cardiovascular system which can take some time to do. I would just do intervals like jog, then walk and continue that...when you feel comfortable(but of course slightly challenged) THEN I'd subsequently increase the intensity for a greater challenge so you could build up your stamina(you want to be somewhere within your safe target heart rate range like between 65-85% ). Some people expect to sustain a certain speed and sometimes you need to build yourself up to it and you will with patience. Plus, try to be aware of your breathing while your in action.

It may be asthma...you might want to get checked...that's how I found out I had it...used to run 2 miles a day and then all of a sudden I couldn't get two blocks without losing my breath....now I have an inhaler and have no more problems...

I have the same problem now that I've started running again. I'm a very fit person, I'm just not in running shape right now...
