I have recently been diagnosed with TMJ. I am currently experiencing the worst bout of it that I've ever had. It has been excruciating (like a nine or ten, on a ten point scale) for like three weeks now. It has become very debilitating. I've recently been put on muscles relaxers and am taking about eight to ten Ibuprofen a day, and it's still not even touching the pain.
Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to get this pain to stop? I can barely eat, and I can't talk or sing without excrutiating pain. Please help!!!!

Have you been to see a TMD specialist?
Have you asked your Dentist to make you a splint?
Have you had an MRI?
If, no to all then I would recommend you:
1.) Make an appointment with ideally a TMD specialist or a Dentist
2.) Tell your Dentist you would like to start Splint Therapy asap, this will give your Temporalis Muscle and Masseter Muscle located above and below your jaw a chance to rest and heal, this could possibly help decrease your pain. You could also ask for a low dose of Diazepam to take at night to help relax your muscle while you sleep.
If your TMJ is solely caused by the TMJ muscles then a *properly made splint* should help.
If your disc is displaced, the slpint will only help you some. You should know right away if the splint helps.
Avoid all chewy and hard foods. Don't force your mouth open. Apply heat or ice to your inflamed jaw muscles which ever feels better and works for YOU!
If you have a splint made, make sure your doctor checks and ADJUSTS your splint often to avoid permanent bite problems.

My dentist prescribed Vicoprofen for me and it helps alot. It is Hydrocodone and Ibuprofen mix (400 mg of Ibu.) I was also told I could take up to 400 mg of Ibuprofen with each Vicoprofen dose. This means I'm getting 800mg of Ibuprofen along with the Hydrocodone every 4 hours. I couldn't go to work with out it. Make sure your dentist/doctor knows how much pain you are in and ask their opinion. I'm also on a muscle relaxer. Good luck.
