I recently had annual blood work done and I received a letter from my doctor stating I was slightly anemic. I asked for a copy of the lab report.

My counts came back as:
WBC 3.7 Normal is 4.0-10.0
RBC 3.6 Normal is 4.0 - 5.3
HGB 11.45 Normal is 12.0 - 15.0
HCT 34.2 Normal is 36.0
Total Iron is norma at 100
Platelet count is normal

Also... my cholesterol and triglyceride levels have dropped significantly in the last two years. My total this year is 135 and two years ago it was 181. In addition my triglycerdes have dropped in one year from 86 to 37.

HDL 72
LDL 56
Triglycerides 37

My doctor said to take an iron pill daily and come back and get it checked in a couple of months. If my iron is normal I don't understand how this could make a difference. In addition I'm a little alarmed at the drop in cholesterol. I am 40 yrs old and have not had any weight change. What is going on???

I wouldn't get to worked up over the numbers at this time, listen to your doctor. The test is one instant in time, and if you checked your cholesterol again, it would be different. As far as the low white/red blood cells, see what they are in a few months. Mine was running 3.6wbc and 4 rbc so immediately I thought the worst. Eventually I calmed down, and a few months later they were up to 4.4wbc and 4.8rbc. The next time they checked it was lower, then higher etc. Significant? I don't know, but the one thing I'm learning, the blood is like a oil sample in your car, constantly changing. The "normal" ranges are the majority of people, while others are on the outside of the bell shape curve. Now if you were consistently higher, and your counts continually decline, I'm sure your doctor will take appropriate action, but he seems comfortable where you are. Good luck and remember stress can suppress the counts as well.
