Hi, my dad has colon cancer spread to liver now in lungs he is doing a 48 hr chemothearapy drip every other week. he has a port to administer the chemo but the nurse accidentally mised the port and leaked a hole bag of chemo under his skin it is really bad it has burned him from the inside out with 4th degree burns they said it will make a hole and create a lot of blood clots.
well we arent at the hole making yet but it has put pressure on his heart and now he has to take nitro pills for his heart. he is on some heavy pain killers but still doesnt knock the edge off. has anyone experienced this or something like it. I dont know what to do next.

Hi-
I'm so sorry abt your father's health. I don't know what to tell you abt the chemo leaking/burning, I don't have exp in that area--but I thought you deserved a response, just so you know you're not alone. I'll assume by the time today you've called the dr abt it and got some answers, and I hope you ratted out the nurse. What that nurse did is terrible and extremely irresponsible. The LAST thing you and he need is an incompetant nurse making big mistakes like this. Am praying for your father and family--please let me know how he is doing.

thanks for your concern. yes we have been to the drs several times and the nurse is really scared that she calls him everyday to check up on him. he did a ct scan today and a pannel of drs said that most of the chemo has soaked into the skin but has left a terrible infection and burn. so now we just wait it out because of his age they are hessitant to do surgery to get the rest out.

I'm so glad the nurse is calling to check on him--I know mistakes happen, we are all human, but that's little comfort when it's something that can't be rectified. I know you're keeping him as comfy as possible--bless his heart. Maybe I was a little harsh abt the nurse--I just know how it feels to be the daughter who can't help dad hwen he's hurting--and it was an avoidbale incident. During my fathers cancer treatment he was given a dose of potassium too quickly-via a shot int he IV instead of hte drip bad over the course of a few hrs...and it was 3 times the amt it should have been. He went into cardiac arrest immediately. I questioned the nurse b/f she did it, and she stammered a bit that it was the right thing to do. I asked for the dr and she gave him 1/2 the amt in the needle and stopped to go get the dr...WE had to try to keep him alive until they got the dr. If she'd have given him the entire amt he'd have died right there. It's just a helpless feeling. As moms we're so used to being able to fix everything. I'm sorry you have to go through this. Prayers and peaceful thoughts to you. Hang in there.
