View Full Version : Have to have a LEEP on Monday - what to expect?

Hi. I have been lurking for a while and I want to first tell you how much great information and comfort I have found on this board. I had an abnormal pap about a year ago - mild dysplasia/high-risk strand of HPV. Had a colp., and this actually came back as normal. (I had to wait a while between the original pap and the colp., so my dr. said that my body must have reversed it or probably was already in the process of reversing it when I had the abnormal pap).

So, at my 6-month pap, it was mild dysplasia again. Then...this latest 6-month pap, mild dysplasia again. However, I am also preparing to move to South America to teach, so because of this, my dr. wanted to do another colp. Then...the colp comes back as moderate dysplasia, so she said a LEEP was necessary. I am not being put to sleep, just going to have a local anesthetic, a shot she said would numb the cervix and also slow the bleeding. I was just wondering WHAT to expect - how long does it take? How painful is it? I imagine the shot might be the worst of it. The colp.'s I've had have actually not been bad at all, just the cramping afterwards. So...I'm hoping this will be the same.

Thanks in advance for your advice and info. I am anxious to get this taken care of. I do NOT want to have to deal with this in a foreign country, either, so I hope this LEEP will be the only one I ever have to have. But, I realize there's no guarantee of that.

:)

Hi!
I had a LEEP while I was awake. It starts out feeling like a pap. Then you feel the Dr. numbing your cervix. It doesn't hurt, its just a little uncomfortable. After that I didn't feel a thing. I think at one point I could, so he numbed me again. Overall i thought worrying was the worst part. Hang in there! you'll be fine.

Thank you, SLJ. That makes me feel more at ease! My dr. said she preferred that her patients be awake for LEEPS, and that if I could tolerate the colp, I could tolerate this as well.

Yea. Just be relaxed and calm. You will not feel anything except for when she numbs you. its kind of like a dull ache.
