I am planning on building a workshop/utility building that we may use for ping-pong among other things. Do any of you with CP have a preference between wood floors and cement slab floors? Thanks. I will check back on WED. We are going to the beach this weekend !!!

Hi Jones-

I prefer cement even though it is hard on your knees when you fall. I seem to fall more often on wood floors. They are very slippery especially when waxed or wet. For me it's like being on ice.

So, how about a carpeted floor?

Jones-

Carpeted would be the least slippery. and the best should someone fall as it would provide somewhat of a softer cusion. If you don't mind my asking, what will your workshop be used for? That may help in detemining the best surface.

stixforlife, here are a few uses I can imagine:

(1) storage for tools, mowers, supplies, etc..

(2) woodworking and other crafts (painting furniture, etc.)

(3) recreations such as ping pong

(4) sitting meditation (on cushions which would sit on a platform or rug)

Are un-finished wood floors still slippery to you?

Thanks for your help!

So, how about a carpeted floor?

I personally think carpet floors are the best type of floors to have.

Jones-

I think a thin dark carpet may be best. The kind of carpet you may see in a movie theater. Choosing a dark color will make any grease or oil stains you may get less noticable.

I don't think I have as much trouble on un-finished wood as I do on finished. But any smooth surface can cause a problem when wet. Whenever I'm not sure about weather or not a surface is slippery I lean on it with one crutch while keeping the rest of me on a more secure place. Think of it like dipping your foot in a pool to test the water.

Can't count the number of times doing that kept me from falling.

Hope This Helps

Thanks write.

Stix, your information is very helpful. So, what kind of crutches do you use - the ones that fit on your forearms or the bigger ones? My son (2 years old) uses a walker now, or we help him. They haven't tried crutches with him yet at PT.

Jones~

I use Guardian Forearm crutches. When I was knee high to a grasshopper many moons ago, I use to use a walker. I can tell you the day I got to use Forearm Crutches was one of the most memerable days of my life.

Luckily companies that make walkers and crutches today try to make them more fun and styish for little ones like your son.

There are even some sports leagues out there for young people and adults with special needs. Never heard of that when I was young, but would have loved it. I think it is so cool that there are organizations out there that help kids with special needs have the most complete childhood possible.

Maybe someday you'll be sitting in the stands as he rips a double over the shortstops head and into the gap.

Please excuse my rambeling but I think the way things have advanced is just great.

Hope This Continues To Help
