I'm 48 years old and have been bleeding for 15 days now. I am probably in perimenopause but is this bleeding normal? Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.
Thanks for any responses.

Have you seen a doctor to discuss your concern? I've gone through 15 days and longer of bleeding (some days just spotting). Irregular periods is one symptom of perimenopause, but please first see a doctor if you haven't already.

I recently had some abnormal bleeding which prompted a visit to my OB/GYN. My periods had always been like clockwork, every 28 days, lasted 3-4 days and were never a problem. Then suddenly one month I began spotting in mid-cycle and spotted for over two weeks. My Dr. suspected perimenopause but to be sure she had to rule out other things first. It was time for my annual Pap so I had that done and she also scheduled me for an ultrasound and did some bloodwork to check hormone levels. Everything came back normal and my hormone levels indicated that I was in menopause. I'd never had night sweats or any of the symptoms they tell us about, just all of a sudden the abnormal bleeding. She said I'll be the envy of all of my friends that I've entered into menopause so easily! Ha! Just what I wanted to hear! Good Luck!

After normal 36 day cycles, I started having periods that lasted most of the month when I was 45. I'd only stop bleeding a day or two, maybe 3 at the most in a row. These periods were also heavy, painful and very clotty. My gyn could find no reason for this, so it must be perimenopause. This went on for a year and a half, mostly like I described. I tried everything and nothing worked to stop the flow. I was on the verge of a hysterectomy when the Depo Provera shots finally got the upper hand. After two years of Depo I still have periods every 3 months or so. They have lasted a couple weeks at a time, but are pretty light.

Please do see a doctor. Prolonged bleeding like you describe can be a sign of perimenopause and probably is. But it can also be a symptom of something more serious.
The same thing happened to me when I first stared peri. It was my first major symptom. I saw my doctor, who told me that it could be a sign of endometrial cancer. He sent me out for an ultrasound which came back normal. I had another similar episode of bleeding a few months later and he did an endometrial biopsy, which also came back normal.

I've had exactly the same experience. I have always been very regular then suddenly last month I had two periods within the month with one of them lasting two weeks. I'm 46 and this is the first symptom I have noticed. A friend has recommended a low dose contraception to regulate my periods. I'm going to my doctor next week to see what he thinks. I've always had painful cramps during my periods and to have this happen twice a month, is just unbearable. Might be best for you to pay a trip to your doctor. Good luck.

I did call my Doctor the day after I posted. Had blood work done which came back normal (low normal on the iron side but we already knew that, I take an iron supplement). I am in perimenopause according to the blood work. I stopped bleeding last Saturday and I have to have an ultrasound done. So we will see. Thanks for all of your responses.

Hi- Well, I hope it's normal because I'm 50 and I just bled for over 30 days. I finally started taking the birth control pill again just to get the bleeding to stop. It stopped, but I really don't like to be on the pill anymore than I have to. My girlfriend has been doing this also, and after all the tests she had the doctor assured her that this is a normal thing in perimenopause. I'll be so glad when I'm finished with all of this! I always tell my husband that men have it made, and then he says that not really, because they have to live with us!!! :)

An ultrasound will rule out any other causes of bleeding like a thickened
endometrium, endometrial polyp, fibroids or ovarian cysts.Good luck to you
and keep us posted.

I'm so glad to hear that others have had this prolonged bleeding as well!
I'm 49 years old and have had regular yearly PAPs and full physicals, including Mammograms etc. and all have come back normal. Last year, I stopped having regular periods and began just spotting for a few days a month and nothing more. So, the doctor did a vaginal ultrasound....all normal.....save for a tiny fibroid which she said was totally insignificant and wasn't the cause for the spotting.
Then, in April of this year, I began daily spotting (very light....not even requiring a pantiliner) which went on pretty much daily until the first week in June. I called the doctor in between and she said my bloodwork showed that I was in perimenopause and not to worry about it unless it was tiring me out. Well, it stopped for about 20 days and now, I'm back spotting again today and feeling like a full period is coming on (but, it doesn't seem to come into a full period) with the usual PMS symptoms (ie: sore breasts, tired, emotional, low backache, crampy, headache, tired, foggy headed, sweets cravings etc.)
Anyone else bothered by this spotting like this? That was about 8 weeks of very light spotting with only a day here and there that I wasn't, then a stop for 20 days and back to it. Any feedback would be really, really welcomed!

Don't feel alone - I have experienced the same thing. Had a normal (if you can call it that - very heavy) period in May. Then in June had what I would call a phantom period - had all the signs it was going to start - then didn't! About a week later - started spotting lightly for about 14 days off and on. Now it feels like period is going start - cramping, face breaking out, headache, etc........
It is so nice knowing I am not the only one going through this!
