Has anyone else ever had their Doc check their hormone levels to determine whether they were in menopause or not? I had read that it isn't a reliable way to determine menopause because hormones fluctuate throughout the month.

I was tested at age 50 during the time when I started having really bad peri symptoms and still having periods, I was within range - normal, dr. said my symptoms weren't menopausal. Then after not having a period for for about 7 mos straight, it showed that I was in post-menopause. I haven't had a period since.

My estradiol level is in the postmenopausal range, but I'm still having monthly periods.

They checked mine too and it showed I was in normal limits. But I have all the symptoms. I am only 36 and my mother went thru menopause at 39. She never had another period. So...I believe I am following her footsteps. My periods have become very irregualar which is odd for me. I have mood swings and ....you name it I have it. I just went to the Gyn today and she put me on Progesterone and Zoloft...very very small dose of zoloft. I took it a long time ago and had that' dont care' syndrome. So we'll see! Hope all goes well with you! I know how you feel!

What dose Zoloft were you put on?
I need to have my hormone levels checked to determine if that is what is causing my insomnia.

I had my hormones checked, also. I am 37 and definately have peri-menopausal symptoms. He said my levels looked normal, but that being on the bcp would help a lot of my symptoms. The one I was trying may have regulated my periods, but did nothing for my symptoms! He said you have to actually be in menopause for the levels to be different and they wouldn't show for peri, but it seems like that is not the case in reading other replies.

Oh, I forgot. I also have pcod, and he did say that changes the level of testerone, I think. That one was off, showing I did actually have pcod, but my ultrasounds already showed that for a fact.

My readings were normal when I had the worst symptoms. That was 5 years ago and I'm still having periods but not much of them. I'm sure my levels aren't normal anymore but I'm on hormones so it's not worth testing them. I'm trying to get off the hormones slowly because I don't have the symptoms so bad anymore. Mine were worst right in the beginning than now.

I'm 46 and have been having peri symptoms for about 7 years, gradually getting worse and then 3 months ago started having major anxiety that was set off by a death in my family (I feel the need to blame peri since I've never experienced this before!) I had my hormones tested and I posted the results on this board (I think under Test Results within the last 2 weeks). Basically my estrogen, testosterone, DHEA and progesterone were all at menopausal levels even though I'm still cycling. I am pursuing bio-identical hormone replacement through my Dr. and a compounding pharmacy. It's very important to have all your hormones tested before taking any HRT. You need to have BALANCE in order for it all to work. You will also have to be retested throughout peri and into menopause because they will constantly be in flux.
I'm not sure I'd agree with the Dr. who said you have to be in menopause for your hormones to be off balance.

What dose Zoloft were you put on?
I need to have my hormone levels checked to determine if that is what is causing my insomnia.
She put me on 25 mgs but I only take half of that. I am very sensitive to Zoloft. I took it a few years ago and didnt care about anything. So we'll see if this works. I only took 25 mgs then. I am on a baby dose now. Just to even out these moods. I still haven't taken the 'mini' pill she put me on. Reading those side effects kind of scare me. I have migraines and surely dont want that to happen more than it has too.

Well ladies..I'm 30!! and just found out that I am perimenopausal..I've been having strange symptoms and weight gain for the past year and we checked EVERYTHING except the hormones because we assumed that it couldn't be that because I was so young! After coming to my wits end and not knowing what to do..I finally decided to take the saliva hormone test...which as I understand it is the most comprehensive hormone test because..unlike the blood test..it gives a 90 day history of your hormones so that they can average them.
My progesterone levels were 'undetectable'/<15 ..normal range is close to 600!!
which makes me estrogen dominant and my DHEA and Testosterone are high..which explains the weight gain and inability to lose weight.
my doc says that low progesterone levels are responsible for various things..including insomnia.
The key is to avoid going to a 'traditional' medical doctor and try going to an Integrated Health facility..I see a Nurse Practitioner instead of a 'doctor' and it has been a godsend!!
Good Luck!
