hi
Thought things were looking up but some sad news my sil who is 12 weeks pg has found out not only has her dh got chicken pox (she is waiting her blood results now) but her risk of down syndrome is 1in23. she has appt regarding her cesarian sp? section tomorrow so i shall be going with her as dh can't go around other pg women, and she has cvs on thursday. {removed} And do you think i should now have to wait to make sure i don't have chicken pox before ttc this month or should i even get a test or vaccine? so many questions sorry.

Hi Weepy,

My next-door Neighbor (who is 42) has a 4 yr old, a 3yr old, and an 8 month old baby. She was told the same thing about her baby, she did all of the tests, and they told her that she was almost definately carrying a down-syndrome baby. She's highly religious, and refused to abort the child, regardless, and she's the most beautiful, smart, healthy little girl you ever saw. Perfectly normal. I've heard there's a high chance of false positives with those tests. Good luck to your SIL, tell her to keep her chin up.

I don't know about the chicken pox vaccine, I had them when I was a kid, so I never even thought about that. Maybe someone else can help you with that one...

Isn't that something.... I know a woman who was told her soon to be born granddaughter would definately have down syndrome. She is highly religious as well and prayed and prayed. The baby was born completely normal too!

My sis even had amneo done & was told that she'd have a baby with downs & he's now 11, completely healthy, & they couldn't have been more wrong. They were also wrong on the sex of her 2nd baby as well - remember medicine is more of an art than a science & stress is never good for momma or baby - so don't let doctors stress you out with fears they plant to avoid lawsuits down the road - they'd rather tell you it's bad & be wrong, then have to deal with lawyers later on. I'll say an extra prayer for ya  it cna never hurt to have some blessing sent your way!

Did your SIL not have chicken pox as a child? If she did she should be immune to it now. Also, I'm not sure if chicken pox is one of those diseases that only affects the baby if it is contracted in the first trimester, and she's about out of that, so it might be okay even if she does catch it. She should ask her doctor about that.

Like everyone else has said, the triple screen of CVS test has a very very high rate of false positives. It's basically a mathematical calculation and a lot of things can affect it, like your due date being off a bit. I really don't know why they even offer it because it's so inaccurate and just makes people worry. Your SIL can have it done again or have an amnio if she is concerned, although even the amnio is not 100% accurate.

As for you and TTC, I don't think chicken pox would have any affect at all until implantation, so it would depend on where you are at in your cycle. You would probably catch it within a week or so if you are going to get it, so if you are at the beginning of your cycle, you would know before you O if you have it and can decide then.

thanks for all your advice and support. Just had massive row with dh about his selfish mother great. I know to come out of the row better off i have to ignore his mothers attitude regarding my m/c not being important because i was not 12 weeks. Because dh is upset that he knows he can't really defend his mom and it upsets him she is so thoughtless and uncaring. Therefore to keep us from rowing i have to keep quiet when i feel like never talking to her ever again. rant over. Thanks for the advice re chicken pox will check it out with my doctor tomorrow. going to put my feet up and try to relax and dream of happiness surrounding us ttc.
