Hey all, my 7 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with a severe urinary tract infection. They have given her anti biotics to clear the infection. They sent her urine sample off to the lab for tests and have now referred her to the hospital for a scan. Is this anything to worry about or just routine in children? What exactly are they looking for? I know we all get urine infections but i have never heard of anyone having to go to the hospital for a scan. Any advise would be great. Oh by the way i'm in the UK. They may just want to get a better look at the kidneys and bladder.Depending on just how long this infection was actually present, it may have caused some sort of damage.it all depends on just 'what" is causing the infection in the first place. At least they are being thourough.Keep me posted on what you find out.marcia

My 11 yr old daughter had frequent UTI's {urinirary tract infections}when she was younger and the drs never investigated as to why. One dr when she was 3 wanted to but we were moving to DC from La CAli within 2 days and when we got to DC the new drs said no to the tests. VCUG and kidney ultrasound. Fastforward to 11, she just turned 12 last week, and in April she had surgery to remove a 8cmx5.5x5.5 cm cyst{benign} from her left ovary and she had her kidney suergery on May 31st. She finally had the tests in March and that's when they found all this. Needless to say this could all be avoided if you get this done while she's young. My granddaughter is 3 and she is on antibiotics for a year to avoid having the same thing. My daughter had a UPJ obstruction but it apparently didn't cause the ovarian cyst. That is a mystery to the drs. She started puberty at the age of 7 so that could be the cause, with her periods beginning at age 10.
Good luck to your daughter. I hope I didn't alarm you. That wasn't my intent. I just don't want to see another child/family have to go through what we did , when it can be prevented or at least caught early before too much damage as in my granddaughter's case.

My daughter has had constant UTI's since birth. We knew it was kidneys because I have bad kidneys. They ran tests in the hospital. First years came up ok, then ran again a few years later and showed kidney reflux. This is where the urine comes down the uretha tube and the child pee's but it all doesnt come out and turns around and goes back up the tube causing infection. She would also dribble after urination. She has been on meds for 4 years and is going into surgery to fix both kidneys. No damage -thats why surgury (to protect against damaging them). So if your daughter has to have tests, don't worry. It's for the best. Find out whats wrong and get it fixed before it really does some damage. Good luck.
