View Full Version : Post-Menopausal Weight Gain

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if this is typical? I've been very fortunate and haven't had a weight problem, even throughout peri I was able to maintain by just being careful not to overdo what I eat and do some exercise. Well, now I am 2 years post-meno and I'm really struggling. I've increased my walking from 2 miles to 4 miles a day, but exercise doesn't seem to have as much of an effect as food (though I continue to exercise for the other benefits.) But it seems as though if I eat just enough so that I am hungry all day, I can keep my weight where I want it. If even for 3 or 4 days I eat just enough so that I am not hungry (trust me, not overeating, just so that I'm not sitting here with hunger pangs all day) I immediately gain a couple, and all in my tummy where it is so unattractive and uncomfortable. Is this how it's going to be from now on? I will have to stay hungry the rest of my life to keep my weight under control?

I really hope not. I have read several places about the importance of us peri/meno. women using weight training for overall health. Lately I've began exercising and I've noticed that the scale remains the same, but my clothes fit better. I wish the scale would reflect a few less pounds, but I am glad that my clothes aren't as snug.

Hopefully someone will reply with some answers to resolving the battle of the bulge.

Oh ladies, i am so with u on this one. I wish i could blame it entirely on the perimenopause, but I just can't. I had a weight issue ever since i had my daughter and had her almost at 37. i've been peri since then. weight goes up and weight goes down, ihave been all sizes, lol now here i am in worse peri and the weight just doesnt' budge. on anti-depressant, i have just gained an extra 9-10lbs. I had this weight issue before, then lost mega weight after my brother died an dthen it all came backon and an extra 10 lbs. and it's all around my mid and hips. Yuck. I exercise, everything and it's still there.

I've been riding my recumbent bike fast and furiously for the last 5 days, for about 39-53 minutes, 8-10 miles, and I've already noticed a reduction in my "gut & bulging hips". I'm hoping that it's not all water weight. For about two months I've also been drinking a lot of green tea (72 ounces daily) since it's suppose to be good for so many things including metabolism.

Andrea I understand about weight gain from antidepressants. Like yourself I went through a period of time when my peri was at its worst and lost 20-30 pounds; only to put it all back on. It started when I began taking Lexapro.

But honestly, ladies who are taking anti-depressants, without it, we really would be a basket case. maybe i am just not roaring my metabolism enough. Anyone here, hear about virgin coconut oil for healing the body and losing weight? maybe i will post something here on that.

Hopefully, are you still on the anti-depressant Lexapro? And if so, u notice weight loss with a hard and fast aerobic burn? Like the bicycle? LOL

Andrea I had to stop taking Lexapro after a couple of months...I was gaining weight fast and furiously! :) I had a craving for carbohydrates, especially pancakes. I'm telling you that in a months time I probably ate more pancakes than I've eaten is yearsssssss. My goddaughter also experienced this carb. craving while on Lexapro. This is weird because my SIL lost weight on Lexapro. I know that Wellbutrin is also suppose to aide in weigh reduction, but I have not reaped this benefit :D.

I've been taking Wellbutrin for about 6 months or longer.

I haven't heard anything about virgin coconut oil.

I'm on Wellbutrin also and it seems, so far, to lessen my appetite somewhat. Also, I do cardio for 45 minutes on my excercise bike about 4 times per week; at least 3 times per week and eat a low fat diet. When I was on Paxil, I gained weight and had no sex drives.

But since I quit taking Paxil, started using progesterone cream, doing the cardio and low fat diet, I have lost almost 10 pounds. I used to work out with weights, but unfortunately, gained weight because it increased my appetite too much. It does make you lose inches though.

Actually, an excercise bike is very good for firming your legs and quadriceps and also your hips, so I just do that and lift weights for my arms. I went froma size 8 to a size 6 in about a year.

Also, I take a thyroid supplement. Estrogen is definitely a no-no! Progesterone actually balances your hormones during menopause and does not cause weight gain the way estrogen hormones do. Your body still produces estrogen, but hardly any progesterone. So, when you add the progesterone cream, your hormones stay balanced. It works for me! :bouncing:

Greeneyes your exercise and way of eating sounds a lot like mine. Since this is day 5 for exercising I hope that soon I'll begin to see the numbers decreasing on my scale. Dropping a dress size sounds wonderful. I'm determined to win the battle of the bulge :).

Unfortunately, I'm one of those individuals who tried progesterone only when I first began experiencing just about every perimenopausal symptom in the book, and using only progesterone made my symptoms worst. I became more lightheaded, dizzy, and depressed. I increased my dosage, decreased my dosage, tried different brands, varied the application places on my body and had all the same results...I felt like death warmed over. Even tried Prometrium which caused my liver levels to become elevated.

I spoke with a well known pharmacist in NYC and he stated that some women simply can not tolerate the progesterone cream, and he gave me other options. After a lot of research and discussion with many women, doctors, physician assistance, nurse practioners and pharmacists I came up with what has enabled me to function daily.

I was recently diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid, but my levels are normal. I'm still dealing with peri symptoms, but thank God many of them have decreased in intensity, subsided, or just more tolerable.

I am two years post and in the last year, my weight increased by 10 pounds. I haven't changed much in my diet so I don't know why this is happening and in addition, I don't know how to get the weight to decrease.

I wasn't able to exercise much in the winter and when all the symptoms were at their worst because of the aches and pains, especially in my legs and knees.

Now, I am walking about 3 miles a day, doing some stretching/yoga, and lifting weights. I lost 5 lbs. when I started but in the past month I can not drop another one.

It is frustrating.

I am nearing the end of perimenopause and I noticed this last year some "fluffiness" around my lower half of my body. I admit I was not working out as much as I use to.
So I notched it up a bit. Started yoga again ( I use to be a yoga teacher!) at home- my own practice, free weights, and now I am in training for the AIDS Marathon in Hawaii in Dec.!!! I am not a runner, this is my first experience with running, but they train you to do a light trot for 2 minutes and then a walk for 2 minutes and that is how you run the marathon. I am now at mile 6.
In just 8 weeks my body has transformed. I do not weight myself but rather go by how strong I feel and also how my clothes fit. I am getting very toned and feel great wearing my summer clothes again. I am starting to get compliments again and people ask me how I keep so trim.
I rotate my workout and never spend more then an hour on each. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I do free weights in front of a mirror in my living room for about 30 minutes ( including squates and leg lifts), then I go into streching and yoga on a floor mat after for about 30 minutes. That feels amazing to my body and me. Then on Tuesday and Thurday, I do a 30 minute run-walk either at a park or in the neighborhood- but those who do not run, just do a moderate to fast walk or whatever your body can take. Saturday mornings is my big walk-run with my pace group at the beach. We add 1 mile every week. That is hardest workout for me but after my endorphins are kinking in and I feel great.
Anyway, my point is adding 30 minutes or more of daily exercise will make a big difference. I am not different then any women on this forum and I not only feel better then when I was on antidepressants ( and without the weight gain and side effects) but I am looking better too. It was a matter of just getting up and taking control again of my life and not giving in to the innner voices keeping me from feeling good again. Often, at least in my experience, I gave in to feeling old and tired and depressed and blamed it on my hormones ( which I am sure is half true), but once I decided to take action things changed alot. I still have my days and feel tired and unmotivated, but I know that the little time it takes to work out reaps lots of benefits. I hope this motivates some of you. Look at tapes or magazines for tips - there is a lot of resources out there and they are free too!!!!!!

What is the thyroid supplement you are taking?

It's called Thyroid Assist; they have different kinds. Make sure and get your thyroid checked because a lot of women our age have underactive thyroids and don't even know. It's impossible to lose weight when you this condition.

Also, there is something made by Xenadrine called 40 plus that doesn't make you nervous and speeds metabolism. That works for me too. I really think doing longer work-outs of cardio on my bike and eating low fat is really helping. Also, I only eat a small snack for dinner, very light. I found that eating a lot in the evenings piles on the pounds. Usually, if I eat a fairly good lunch, I am not that hungry for dinner. Going to bed slightly hungry will keep you slim. I usually have air popped corn with buttery spray and light salt. A big bowl is only about 300 calories and no fat and lots of fiber! Or, I will have a couple of apples, which really fill me up. I know it's hard, but it does work.

Yep, you and some others have confirmed this. I started this thread saying that I could lose weight and maintain it only if I exercised alot (90 minutes per day) and stayed a bit hungry all day. That seems to be the key. I've been trying to lose just 5 pounds to get to my comfortable weight and I have been able to do it, but it is very hard. What is frustrating is that there is no longer any margin for error. When I was younger if I slipped off the strict regimen for 2-3 days - work got too busy to exercise, ate a little too much at family gatherings, etc - I would rarely gain anything and if I did, just a day or 2 of being careful would get rid of it. Now any slight deviation from the regimen and I immediately gain, and have to increase the exercise and cut back further on the food and it will take days or weeks to get rid of one or two crappy pounds. It's annoying, but I guess it comes with getting older.

Hi ,

This discussion is very timely. I am not post menopause am still in peri with periods fluctuating (mostly coming in the early 20s but this past month got one at day 38 and then today got one at day 18..very disappointed to see it!!). Anyway, I have noticed that although I have increased my exercising the scale won't budge except for 3 or 4 lbs. I just feel bloated and it is frustrating. I went to try on some clothes today at the mall for a trip we are taking and I was nearly in tears...and was in tears in the car. To think that I pretty much could wear anything at one time and now just do not feel I look good in anything is very upsetting.

I have been very faithful to exercising since May (before then I was not doing as much due to an ankle problem) but I have been getting back into it and upping the time I do on the recumbant bike or elliptical machine. Previous to the ankle problem I did Jazzercize and pilates. Now I go to the gym and do the machines I mentioned and do a pilates dvd. would like to start back to Jazzercize soon.

I don't have any answers, so I am sorry to the original poster. I am just needing to vent tonight and a lot of you seemed to be going thru similar situations with your weight. You know sometimes I am very encourraged as like Hopefully I do notice my clothes fit better but I think getting this period today just knocked the wind out of my sails and I am so down that I am discouraged.

Take care,

rmc

Hi All, and Roxanne

I have been depressed over this very thing for a while now. I used to be "fluffly" when i was on BCP, but after I got off of them, I began to slowly lose weight until several years ago I got down to where I wanted to be, and pretty easily could stay there. Like someone said, I could splurge and then a couple of days of careful eating and it would come off. Some how I gained three lbs last year that no matter what I do - will not come off! Then I started on Lexapro and another three jumped on the band wagon. I keep battling to get down, but I will lose a couple - and then eat a good bit one day and then they are back. Starve for a few days and they are gone - and then they are back. It truly is frustrating to know that I could keep it off pretty easy and now I pretty much look at something and gain!

I really hope this doesn't continue, because I don't want to be chunky again. I have worked too hard to keep it off and stay small!

Boo hoo - what are we gonna do??

(RMC, I am sorry you had a bad shopping experience. You're just not having a good day at all are you?) HUG!!

Jackie

I asked the pharmacist about Xenadrine 40 and she said it wouldn't be such a good idea coz there is stuff in there that can make u nervous, jittery etc. and I'm also taking Prozac

Oh RMC, me too and I am going away next month. I wish I could blame all this on Prozac but before I ever took any anti-depressants, I had a weight issue when I got into perimenopause. So maybe I have an extra 10 lbs. from the Prozac but the other weight was my issue when I wasn't under a major attack of anxiety.
