I started taking adderall XR 20 mg about 4 months ago. I took it for about 2 months and stopped when school was out for the summer. I suffered from severe withdrawals - I never had any energy! I started taking it again about three weeks ago, because of that. I didn't notice the same effect that it had on me originally. Could it be that my body built up a tolerance to it? Will that ever go away? How long will it take? Can anybody recommend a way to gradually wean myself off of it for periods of time when I don't need it?

Unfortunately, yes, it is possible to build up tolerance to Adderall. You are on a relatively low dose so your doc might consider increasing the dose for you. However, it seems to me, that is risky. You take more, develop tolerance, take more, switch to Dexedrine, take more.... Then what? Only you can decide if you want to go down that path or not.

It would be best to talk to your doc about weaning strategies rather than relying on information from people like me!

PS. I should have also said that possibly you could be experiencing this. Quite often, patients often experience a really nice feeling of wellbeing when they first start taking stimulants. That feeling doesn't last. It is possible that feeling is what you had the first time and aren't experiencing now. HOWEVER, despite that, you COULD still be experiencing some benefit to your ADD. Does that sound like a possibility?
