Hello there everyone. I have a MAJOR TMJ problem. Everytime I open my mouth wide enough, My jaw totally pops out and veers to the left. (jaw pops on right side)I am visiting my orthodontist ina week, but I was wondering...I have been looking up "tmj splints" And theylook NASTY! My TMJ is hereditary, and if I dont do something soon, I will need surgery. Can braces help my TMJ problem? or do I need a splint (dun dun dun) instead? Keep inmind my teeth are 100% straight, and perfect (not to brag Ha Ha).Please help!

70% of population has at least one TM Joint that pops or clicks.
it's not normal, but so common that popping/clicking is not considered significant,
unless there is pain involved.
deviation of jaw upon opening may not be joint problem, but rather asymetry of your
head.
nobody has perfectly symmetric skull.
see if your ears are at the same height, if so, ask someone to see your ears from top of your head and see if they are located at the same distance front to back.
if they are not, that explains why your jaw is deviating.
if they are more or less symmetric, yet your jaw deviates alot, then there may be
joint or muscle problem.
if you are not in pain, no treatment is necessary.
surgery is never a good idea for TMJ, unless you have destructive joint disease like
severe reumatoid arthritis.

My jaw is notonly popping/clicking, it is dislocating when i open my mouth and completelly veers to the left.It also hurts excrusionally and makes a strange"click"sound. my father has the same proble, but extremely better. Whatare the splints and how on earth do they work?? would braces be better or help the same wth out having to deal with the uncomforts of a splint???
