Hi again.....just venting a little. I am getting really nervous now. My surgery is still 2 1/2 weeks away, but it is coming up FAST! I am not really nervous about the actual surgery, but just about the fact that they want to take my ovaries. I know many of you have told me that you feel great on the hormones, but what are they like at first? Does it take time to adjust? What are the risks of that procedure? Will I gain weight or get a hairy lip?? LOL....I know that sounds silly, but I am serious!! lol.....I just want to know what to expect...they will be doing it abdominally not vaginally.
ANY support or info would be helpful.....thanks in advance!

Hey Lil'Pea
It will be fine. I know it is scarry. I am 7 weeks post op from a abdominal hyst, they took everything but my cervix. I FEEL GREAT !!!!! I don't remember EVER feeling this good !!!
Listen, you will be on pain meds after surgery. Probly like me a Morphine Pump. It DOES help !! You will need it. It is going to be hard and painful to get out of be, so make sure you call the nurse to help you out. Also very important YOU MUST WALK !!!! The day you have the surgery, don't worry about the walking then, but PLEASE make sure you start walking the day after and so on. Otherwise you could end up with scar tissue.
That night right after my surgery they put me on Estroderm Patch 0.05 mg. It does help. There are different doses and I am on the least due to my Adenomyosis that I had. My doc wants to avoid me getting Endo again. Estrogesn can trigger it again.
I am dealing with insomnia, I do get some hot flashes and night sweats exspecialy the day's before I have to change the patch, but I will deal with that over the pain I was dealing with anytime !! I probably do need a strnger patch, but I want to see if I can handle this because I don't want to take the chance of dealing with Endo again !!
I do have to say I forgot to put the new patch on the other day....well, I was not a pleasant person.... was I moody !!!! You could deffinately say that I was a real you know what !! Then all I wanted to do was cry !!
You also must make sure you take 1200-1500mg of Calcium and a multi-vitiamin daily. Due to bone loss that can occur after having your ovaries removed.
Any questions, please feel free to ask !!!
Good luck and keep me posted !!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :D Your input really helped me alot! Especially knowing your surgery was so recent....can I ask if you've had sex yet? Is it uncomfortable? How about your energy level? Do you feel fully recovered? I am glad that in your post, you also included the bad parts (like the night sweats! :blob_fire ) because I really want to know the good AND bad of a procedure like this so I know what to expect. Thank you thank you thank you. You answered one of my questions ahead of time too.....'what will happen if you forget to change the patch/take your hormones?'....lol....I figured it would probably mean b**** city!! lol....
How long was it before you felt well enough to really get up and walk around.....like grocery shopping/etc? For example, my surgery is on the 19th, and some friends are coming to visit us on August 6th....will I feel up to it by then? They want to go to the Aquarium so that means some walking around. That visit is only 18 days post op....what do you think?
Again, thank you for your post......and quick reply...it seems this board doesn't get much activity....I wonder why?

When I had my hyst I was more worried about losing my ovaries than anything else. I was worried about losing it mentally and gaining alot of weight.
I was on lupron for 3 months before surgery so I got a taste of what to expect. It was no fun but it took the fear away..after surgery I had to go without hrt for 3 more months because of endo..The lupron menopause was alot worse than surgical menopause..
If you go straight to the estrogen after surgery you will still have a store of estrogen in your body which will help. Since I was so depleted it took 2 weeks for my levels to go up..then I felt great..
Im using the climara patch..at first it didn't last the whole 7 days so my Dr wrote my prescription to change every 6 days and I got a extra patch every month..
I feel great on the estrogen,, no weight gain or even pms as long as I don't forget to change my patch. If I forget for a few days the hotflashes will remind me..
I had some trouble sleeping too and joint pains but I started using natural progesterone cream and I'm doing much better now.
Good luck and try not to worry..

Thank you! All of this helps so much....mostly just to know that other women have/are going through it and survived! lol.....my aunt had everything removed years ago and the loss of hormones caused her to have heart failure...I know this is an extreme case, but having it happen to someone so close to me is just kinda scary....I am starting to feel better now that I am getting some input.
Also, thanks for adding about the weight gain....I hate to admit how worried I am about it. I am not so worried about gaining SOME weight but I don't want to gain alot. I have been so small my whole life and don't want to just start gaining weight rapidly ya know?
How soon do the hot flashes start after surgery? A few days? Hours? So you say I should ask to get on the patch immediately? Also, have you tried other HRT's other than the patch? How do they differ? I think I would prefer to use the patch if it works for me....I am not good at remembering to take meds everyday so I definitely don't want to do that. What about the shot? Has anyone tried that?
Sorry to keep bugging you guys with more questions! I just like to be prepared for all aspects of things. I like to know the good and bad. I have a tendancy of expecting things to be really bad and then I am always pleasantly surprised! Works for me! :D
Thanks guys for your support! You can be sure I will keep checking back for more info, and also, I will be sure to let everyone know how the surgery goes. I will be tremendously bored  , so I will be spending tons of time on my laptop......
Thanks!

I've been small my whole life also, wonder if thats why i also worried about the weight gain I heard so much about. I gained alittle when I was on bcp years ago so just assumed I would from the hrt. Maybe since the dose is so much lower with the estrogen I'm on is why I haven't had any weight..Its been 4 years since my hyst.
I was already in menopause before the hyst from the lupron, lupron shuts the ovaries down completely. I was allowed any estrogen for 3 months after surgery so I don't know what is like to go on estrogen right away. But I know of women that have woke up from surgery with the patch on.
The reason I chose the patch was I liked the idea of a slow steady release of the estrogen, similar like what my ovaries would do. With a pill you get it all at once, it has to go though the liver first before getting to the bloodstream. The patch is released right into the bloodstream. I researched hrt's before I had the hyst and decided on the patch, so I've never tried the pills or shot forms of hrt.
Its good that your asking questions, hopefully others will chime in with their experiances.

Thanks again, spongebobmama! Your input is very helpful and comforting. Tonight I will do {removed} to see what I can learn...but I was already kind of leaning towards the patch even before. It just seems like what would be easiest for me to deal with. Are they weekly or monthly? Either way, it would be alot easier for me to deal with than pills. I too like the idea of giving my body the closest possible thing to what it is use to. I am relieved too that it has been 4 years for you and that you have gained no weight. At 110 lbs, I could use a FEW pounds but like I said, I don't want to gain too much. Here's another question too: Have you had any facial hair growth? lol...I know that might sound silly, but I thought I heard a long time ago that losing your ovaries could cause that....To me, that would be worse than weight gain! I could work on the weight, but I am NOT sharing a razor with my husband! LOL!! (slight exhaggeration, I know!)
I certainly have NO ISSUES with feeling like less of a woman without my 'insides'....I can't wait to get it out....I am having horrible PMS right now and the only thing that's making it tolerable is that I know it's the LAST TIME!!! YEEEEEHAAAAAAWWWW.... :bouncing:
Also, I can't have more children anyway so why suffer needlessly? Seems silly to me!
Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend! :jester:

Hey Lil'Pea--Good luck w/your hyst--you'll do great!! I know it's scary. You have a good attitude abt it. Like you, I had no issues w/losing my female insides and being "less than" woman b/c of it. I know some ppl do-as a friend of mine did-but she's fine now-3yrs later. I think for her the benefits far outweighed the cons. I had a radical hyst at age 35-(5 1/2 yrs ago)-4 mos after having twins. Took my ovary (had one out 9 days after their birth due to a tennisball size tumor on it) uterus, tubes and cervix--mine was abdominal/vag assisted. I have never felt better. Use the morphine--great advice, and also walk. (and keep taking your pain meds when you get home--don't let the pain get too bad before you take it, at least for a few days home, or it won't be as effective.) When I woke up in recovery the first thing I remember thinking was how the small of my back hurt. My dr said it was from him cutting the wall itno the peritoneal cavity to tye off the nerves and blood flow there.(whatever that means) Then I hit the morphine pump and I forgot all abt it!! haha But my back did hurt bad--some ppl it doesn't hurt at all. You got some terriffic advice above...you're very lucky. You may be up for out of town guests by day 18--your body will tell you. I'm not sure abt walking ALL DAY LONG at the Aquarium--that my be a bit much, but let your body give you the queues--it will tell you what you can and can't do. Your job is to LISTEN to it--don't let the fact that you have guests sway you into being the "hostess w/the mostess"--they'll understand. You don't want to do anything to relapse -- you can end up back in the hosp if you do. I was told not to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk for a few weeks--and basically no lifing or picking up for 6 weeks total. I really think he restricted me that long just to be on the safe side--b/c he KNEW I'd be holding the babies.(he told me to do that only when I was sitting down) I was fine after 4 wks in that area, but didn't overdo it.
It is the best thing I've ever done. I also had terrible cramps and bad bleeding every month--you know the "in-bed-don't-even-look-at-me-too-hard-b/c-it-hurts-so-bad-give-me-pain-pills" type pain. Not anymore for me--and you too very soon. This menopause is much easier than Lupron. When I was doing In-Vitro fertilization they used Lupron to put me into menopause. My body "crashed" w/in 18hrs I was in chemical menopause...it ws really horrible-a lot of tears and hot flashes for a few days. The 2nd time we did it they lowered me a lot slower than 18hrs-but this surgical meno was soooo much easier than that. Three of my friends woke up w/the patch on--my ob/gyn wanted me to wait a few mos before deciding on HRT to see if I could do w/out it. I lasted abt a week & I was on Premarin. I switched to Vivelle Dot and now am on Climara--(it has a generic and was $10 a month vs. $30) As Spongebobgamma said above--it is a steady flow into the bloodstream. Right now they are changed weekly--usually you get 4 a month. Monthly would be GREAT tho, wouldn't it?? I'd notice on the premarin pill at abt hr 18 I'd begin to get warm and hot flashes. I tried taking it at night, but still by late aftnoon-hr 18 or so, I could tell it was waning in my system. The patch is awesome--and it will tell you when you need to change it if you forget a day or so. If I forget on Day 8 I get itchy under the patch-(plus wicked hot flashes--which I don't know if they really are all that bad, or if it's b/c I haven't had them for 5 yrs they seem bad...) I am small also-120lbs & I haven't had weight gain. When I do gain a little I am prone to gain around my middle--but I have PCOS so I don't know if it's that, which is common for PCOS ppl, or if it's from the hyst. I have no mustache--altho I am Italian so that was a possibility BEFORE my hyst!! haha just kidding! :jester: But seriously--no facial hair. Yea-that would be really bad. (I think that's more evident when you use HRT w/testosterone in it...) I had some headaches when I was on the premarin pills, so I switched to HRT w/testosterone in it--but that made my skin oily--almost greasy, really bad--(Ibegain to get undergrounders--and at 35 that was not going to fly)and since I had no problems w/sexual desire I went back to estrogen only. We attributed the headaches to the pill lasting 18 hrs--they stopped when I went on the patch. Have to say w/out being too obnoxious-my sex life is better than ever-b/c I feel great all the time!
Hopefully you will make it through this w/flying colors. I'll keep you in my thoughts....take care and keep counting down...it'll be here b/f you know it!!
Take care--Gina

Hi Lil Pea
Hope you had a wonderful July 4th !!
Here is a little more imput...The hot flashes and night sweats started that night after my surgery, but the thing is I started having these night sweats and hot flashes when I started getting my cysts. I guess my hormones were realy messed up from my problems.
As for facial hair??? Unfortunatley I have been dealing with facial hair for years !!!!! I was actualy hoping the hyst would stop mine...NO LUCK !!
I am still fighting an insomnia problem. I am seeing my GP in a couple of weeks for a check up, so I will mention it to her. She has no idea that I had a hyst.
I don't think the aquarium visit is a real good idea. You must walk, but don't push yourself or there could be problems.
As for sex??? Well, I got the ok 3 weeks after !!! I was healing real weel and fast !! It was a little uncomfortable so we went easy. I am great now and what a difference !! I had so much pain before the surgery with sex...it is great now !!
I did do shopping in my 3 week post op, but be careful !!! I over did it !! I did TOO MUCH LIFTING !!! Then, I did such an idiotic thing...I was at work and hopped out of the work shop Bey, then OH MY GOD !!!!! I litterly dropped to my knees !!! I ended up with abdominal pain, that lasted for 1 1/2 weeks because I thought I was superwoman !! I was lucky I didn't damage anything !!
Keep asking questions !!!!! It is important !!!!

Hi guys! OMG, thank you so much for all the information. I don't know if any of you know how helpful this is to me. I am relieved to know, of course, that no one has had major weight gain or abnormal hair growth. But most of all, I am thrilled to hear that you are feeling healthy now and have no regrets. Also, that your sex lives are still good. It's great to hear.
I drive myself nuts with nerves! And a couple times I have had dreams of the surgery which is just ridiculous! In one of them, I was up near the ceiling looking down watching the surgery.....and suddenly, I noticed on the monitor that my heart rate was getting up over 150.....and I was freaking out because no one was noticing!! Silly huh? lol....I have always been one to have very vivid dreams, so none of this is surprising me thank goodness....
Well, it's late  and I'm off to bed......I'll keep posting, and for sure post after my surgery....
Also, my pre-op appointment is on the 12th and I will be discussing HRT's with my doctor. I am sure now that I want to try the patch immediately and hope for the best! I am anxious for my appointment though because by now, I have a ton of new questions for the doc! But he will probably be surprised how much info I have received here too. Thanks a million!

Hi guys! Thanks for remembering that my pre-op was yesterday! Actually, it was SUPPOSE to be yesterday. I have rescheduled my surgery for september 13th now. But I swear it wasn't because i chickened out! I was so excited, i was counting down the minutes! What happened was, my best friend came to me in TEARS saying that she had prayed on the matter over and over and just felt so strongly that I needed to wait. She said she didn't know why, just that the feeling was overwhelming. So , OF COURSE, if someone brings me a messege through prayer, i am gonna listen! lOl......sooooooo, now my pre-op date is september 8th, surgery on the 13th. It will work better too, cuz my daughter will be back in school so i will be able to get more rest during the day. I will still be on here periodally to chat and ask questions though! ANd FOR SURE I will let you all know what happens at the pre-op...thank you for all your support, you have all been amazing. Talk again soon!

Thanks for the update--and talk to you soon!!

Hey Lil'Pea,
I am one year and one month post hysterectomy. I couldn't feel better. No more periods!!! Surgery was easier than I expected. I was on the estrogen patch and then switched to the pill. I have now weaned myself off and take nothing. No hot flashes. No night sweats. No facial hair. Great sex life. Hysterectomy is the best thing I ever did. Remember that positive thinking brings positive results. Best of luck. Rita77

Wow! DJL at last someone who thinks the same way as we do in the UK. I had my abdominal full hysterectomy in january this year and ovaries everything out. Immediately after my op i woke up pain free (but i had an epidural fitted during being asleep) this was removed 24 hours later, but great pain relief. i had trapped gas, that was more painful than anything else, peppermint cordial or something similar or in water, is great but i had no incision pain, mine is vertical about 6 inches, and healed by the time i left the hossie 7 days later. Standard here in the uk they make us get up out of bed 24 hours after our op, all my tubes came out, catheta, epidural and then we up walking around, very slowly doing the 'slipper shuffle' we all called it in my ward. A great crowd of ladies about 12 of us in total on the ward, and all great fun, kept all our spirits up. I have to say i found sleeping fine and as i have always been very slim was very worried about turning huge very quickly, but it didn't happen like that. i did put on weight, only about 6 lbs but i have lost it since then. I agree very much with Djl about moving about, it makes you feel much more supple and more relaxed, they certainly don't advise us here in the Gynae wards to sit in bed all day, they make us get upand walk to the kitchen for our meals, making tea, sandwiches etc, just little things, but we aren't allowed to lift anything heavier than a kettle for 6 weeks, one of the main reasons for this, apart from the obvious, is also that we can't feel when we do damage, due to having nerve endings cut, these take about 6-9 months to repair. Even at my stage post op, 4 months, i am doing a lot of exercise, sit ups galore, weight training and running, and still can't get my abs back! but eventually they will come i've been told. but i am fitter now than i have ever been, and changed my whole diet and way of life. It is very important to have calcium, supplements, and in your diet. i have a lot of protein, also because im working out, but also vitamin e in nuts etc and pulses, all the good stuff you can eat, and not too much of the trans fats, i.e. buns, cakes, and processed foods, but more of the peanut butter and lovely bread, and milk products all are good, not all fat free but we need these polyunsaturated fats anyways, they're good for us. So a good healthy diet, little exercise and a good fit mental attitude you will be as fit as a fiddle in no time sweetie, and like all of us will feel somuch better, pain free. after years of pain and hassles the op is a god send and should make us all feel better. but don't be afraid to ask lots of questions at the hospital, i found if i didn't always ask, i didn't get told stuff, maybe different where you are though. I wish you all the best and everything will be fine. take care. Fi from UK

Hello Everyone.
I want to start by thanking you all for being so precise in these discussions. I am going for a complete hysterectomy on 7/14/06 due to having endometiosis and I have been wondering mostly about the side effects after the ovaries are out. My main concern's were possibly facial hair growth and the attitude adjustments that I may need to have! You have all pretty much answered these questions for me from your discussions and I am glad that I was able to find you. I am looking forward to having the surgery because of the pain and numerous mis diagnosis that I've had over the past years and I now have a new confidence and a number of questions to take back to the Dr for my pre op visit that I had not even considered before. Thank You again for contributing to the site for new women to learn from you and your experiences. I wish you all the best of luck with everything that you go through.
