:bouncing:
I have been on a lot of message boards, my son 5yrs has been fighting off respr. infections, mono, anemia, etc.. They just removed his tonsils and adnoids because his cat scan revealed persistant, chronic sinus infection. 1 month from surgery we are back with another sinus infection, but to top it off his hair has been coming out for months some on his pillows in the am etc.. but recently in the bathtub his bath water is full of his hair. His thyroid was tested a few months ago and it showed normal, there is no evidence of ringworm or anytype of scalp infection. My son's pediatrician said anytime you have major surgery or chronic illness, this is normal. I've never heard of this after a child has had his tonsils out! I did not have this problem with my older son. Anybody else go through this with thier child??

I havent had this happen with my child but with myself - YES. Iam not saying this is his problem but they might not be testing the correct ingredient in his blood to predict if his thyroid is over - reacting or not... They messed up with mine for almost a year before realizing the real. (((TSH is one of the orders that is mostly ordered now))) I am not sure what it stands for either, but I know for sure that is the good one.
I had to have a couple of tests done too to finally rule it out... With me it turned out being a Thyroid problem and I have Grave's Disease.... (Unexpectadly since it does not run in my family AT ALL. My family doctor did quite a few (Atleast 3 different types of blood tests) and then sent me to an Endocrinologist for my thryroid.

Yeah the thyroid thing sounds the most logical to me, especially when he is so easily fatigued etc.. Im going to look back at his labs. For his thyroid I remember they tested the T3 AND T4. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES! Sharon

I am assuming since your son has respiratory issues that he is on seriods either pills or inhaler?was there some sort of aggressive treatment using steriods recently? This can cause your hair to fall out.My son was on really high doses of steriods after his liver transplant and his hair just kept getting thinner and thinner until they reduced his pred down to only 5mgs per day.just a thought. Also having surgery can contribute to this as well.i lost alot of hair after each one of my surgeries.they also made my hair very dry and brittle. They do use alot of different meds for various reasons during and after any surgery.I hope you can find the reason soon.FB

Well- he has done a 5 day series of prednisone 3 different times since last November. The last time was end of April. My pharmiscist told me that wasn't a side effect of Prednisone. As far as respiratory - yes he has had tons of probs. He was having to do Advair discus 2xdaily, xeponex neb as needed for cough sometimes 2 or 3 times a day, singulair1x daily, nasonex 1xdaily, Icar {iron} 1tablespoondaily, antibiotic of the week 2xdaily. When he was doing Albuterol in his neb. He would act so strange afterwards, heart pounding , but he would go to sleep immediatley afterward. Changed him to xeponex and if he does that on a reg basis, he starts this rapid eye blinking that is very rapid , but it stops as soon as I stop using the neb. They have figured out his respiratory problems are from severe , chronic sinus infections. But his hair is coming out as you described, for months it was some on the pillow in the mornings, now it seems to be when you wash his hair, the bathtub is just full of it too. My pediatrician, was like-"he looks great to me". So I'm at the point if he starts to look bald, they will have to find out something. You can't really tell right now by just looking at him.

Despite what the pharmacist told you that hair loss not being a possibility when using pred.my sons transplant co ordinator and his tx surgeon both stated that they see this alot in patients.i think the combo of having any type of surgery and the use of the anesthesia and the pred is what does it actually. If this truely IS the cause, it should be getting better with time.If not, well, then at least this was ruled out as a possibility and you can then move onto another possible cause.Just keep taking note of his hair loss as you have been.hope this helps.FB
