I had an austin bunionectomy the second week of June. Everything where the surgery was done is doing excellent. My stitches were pulled last week and when the doctor gets back he is pulling the pin (the kind that sticks out and lays againt the foot) The problem is the center and other side of my foot the pain is severe to this day, the bruising was bad and it was bright red, not infected. (but took very strong penn. just in case) below my other toes are painful and under my foot..it's like no one can figure out whats wrong, just that its unusual...its been 25 days and it hurts bad..but not the surgery site. in researching sites in hopes of getting an answer, i ran across RSD...could this be a possibility...i just can't do this anymore i'm tired of all the xrays please help

Did the Doctor say anything about RSD?

No the Dr has not said that it was RSD, but was very confused at the symptoms and was not sure at the time what it was. she first thought it was an infection, but the area was not even warm. But i was given an up'ed dosage of Penn. (augmenten). she thought it was very odd that that area was so affected let alone still this long after surgery yet the surgery site was beautiful. She just told me to contact her backup if there was a problem while she was gone. and that she would tell her about the situation. I ended up calling and was sent for another xray, she thought maybe something within the foot broke upon adjusting the bone...but nothing showed....This is crazy what is causing this pain....there...I had the same surgery on the other side of my foot and did not experience this...I know every surgery is different...but when it confuses the 2 dr.s...that's why i was looking for an answer.

You need to find a new Dr.It sounds to me that it could be RSD.Just my opinion.I have been tested for RSD and Im boarder line.Does your foot/leg hurt when you touch it,like a burning feeling? If it's not RSD it sounds like it could be something else that your Dr should be concerned about. You have to keep pushing them but you need to find out what is going on.Especialy since it is now traveling up your leg.Good luck,

I'm still here, The back up doctor told me that day to go to the ER. Why do i do that to myself...horrible experience...but another xray, and a doppler of the leg showed nothing, and there was a pulse...so they gave me pain pills and sent me home....only wrapped my foot with one piece of gauze because i asked if they were going to wrap it....the back up had me come in and agreed the foot was cold to the touch, way swollen again and bruising again, mined you not where i had surgery, She wrapped it up for compression and she said they can't do any tests on the foot (such as an mri ++) until the pin comes out. I swear my foot is going to pop. i'm supposed to get the pin out tomorrow so they can look into why this is happening / what's causing it...just give me luck through the pain till then. Thanks again for asking i'll let you know as i find out

Well went to the DR. and was told i definately have RSD....i asked if there was any chance it could be something else. but he said all else was ruled out...and the symptoms all match.....bad news of course, and then to top it off, i called my job to find out when they sent my Temp Disability papers back, and was told i no longer have a job.....and that my things are in a box. Well....i'm sure things happen for a reason, but this sucks...a double wammie

Hi Jo,

I am sorry to hear about your suffering. What is RSD, and what causes it?

Thanks

Hi Sandra49....I'm still learning about it myself...but its painful...and ugly...and i'm sure i'll be able to walk but im worried that maybe i wont....RSD stands for Reflex Sympethetic Dystrophy..(but there are alot of other names for it)...I guess it's like a type of damage to the sympathetic nerve...which is caused by trauma (accident or surgery, etc.) I'm having a hard time understanding it so i wont try to describe it, i just type in RSD on the internet and picked a sight to read about it.... My dr said 1 in 10,000 get it, yea i can get that but cant win the lottery......Thanks for asking and replying to my post

Jo--I'm so sorry to hear about your double bad news. What your employer did to you doesn't sound legal. In my state you cannot lay off or dismiss a person who has petitioned for disability. Several years ago a poor performing employee in my company ended up submitting disability paperwork for carpal tunnel syndrome about one hour before he was brought in to his boss's office to be layed off. They had to cancel the layoff for legal reasons. Check into this and take care of your foot.

Thanks for the info......yea i thought so....im in NJ....and i believe they can get in alot of trouble....but i don't think i want to go back where i'm not wanted....they never had any problem with me i was their only assistant...and did everything....even stuff i could have fought....plus....maybe this is Gods way of getting me out of there....It was vicsous....things being thrown....screaming and yelling.....He has OCD...but uses it as an excuse.....would create things to yell about.....then apologize....20 minutes later.....maybe its best for me anyway to be away from that....but its still wrong Thanks for your post

In the US.. FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) provides 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for disability where your employee cannot legally dismiss you. If they do not provide you with this, then they are breaking the law. If you need more than 12 weeks, then they can dismiss you.

wakkochic17....thanks....yeh my surgery was on 6/8....it wasn't even 6 weeks when they fired me......do you know who i contact...i honestly don't know what to do....its probably better i don't go back.....but i don't think its fair they did this....they are very cold hearted selfish people. they shouldn't be able to treat people like this....thanks again for the info

justjo.. I can see if I can find out who to contact. Our HR person should know. I know it's upsetting. I had a friend who had some health problems recently and she was let go as well. They tried to find a way around it by "discontinuing" the position and giving her the pink slip instead of actually firing her. But then they renamed the position and hired someone else. I don't think she's taken any action though.
