I never examine my vagina so I don't know what is normal. Today I decided to give myself a self-exam to make sure everything looks normal. I noticed that at the opening of my vagina, there is this fleshy thing that looked a little odd. I did a search to see if I could determine what this part of my anatomy was called. After doing a search, I think it may be called the hymen. I thought a woman no longer has a hymen after she has been sexually active. I did some reading and it says that after having sex, a woman is left with remnants. What I have looks a lot more substantial than remnants. What troubles me is that it looks very light pink, almost white. It looks sick to me. I'm not sure if this is normal. I don't want to schedule an appointment with my gyno and have it turn out to be perfectly normal. I don't want to ignore it if it I have an infection.

You'll always have part of the hymen. The hymen just becomes "broken" or disattached from most of the vagina during penetration. The flap if skin is still attached.

Unless you're experiencing pain, itching, or other problems, there is probably no need to see your gyno. It sounds totally normal.

Sounds normal to me too. It's hard for women because we generally don't know what a "normal" vagina looks like. But most women have extra flesh outside of the actual hole and it is usually a light pink. Not sure if it's remnants of the hymen or not but it is normal.
Good luck,
Meg
