Hoping someone might be able to offer some feedback on a complication with my saline implants. I had an augmantation in January, and the implant (under the muscle) in my left breast has dropped down to the point that a considerable portion of it can be easily seen, and easily felt, when I lift my arm. My surgeon has confirmed that it is indeed the implant moving, but much to my surprise said that she wanted to wait six weeks and have a look at its position then. She advised me to wear an underwire bra in the meantime, however, I am experiencing some pain (especially when I put pressure on the left side or bend over) around the breast, and underwires can be uncomfortable. It seems to me that another surgery is inevitable at this point to corect the problem, and I am very dissapointed. My surgeon also mentioned that she is uncomfortable with the thought putting another scare in a different position, and almost seems reluctant to correct the problem, but I don't think it can remain as it is. It is painful and unattractive. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience? Thanks.

Read my entry (Sugarplum)under'....please stand up'. It appears that some of us are just unlucky. I have quite a lot of pain which has been explained as scarring. Yes, you will need a repair but the surgeon can go through the previous opening to reduce scarring. Use vitamin E cream once it has healed to make the scar fade. I have an appointment this coming tuesday to discuss yet another repair - but I still never regret having them done and would be devastated if I ever had to have them removed.

sounds like you could be bottoming out in that breast. If your surgeon doesn't give you the answers or solutions you want, go to another surgeon for a second opinion. Sorry you have to go through this. :(

Thanks to both of you for your input. Do you happen to know why this occurs? My doctor also said that "if it drops any lower we'll have to fix it". I feel like it needs to be fixed regardless. I would think that if an implant can be seen at all it is a condition worthy of repair - wouldn't you?

Hi J Weaver,

I'm sorry you have to go through such a bad experience . Can you tell me, when did you first notice that your breast was bottoming out? Were there any signs at the beginning?

Hi rlopez,
My surgeon's office staff provided a packet of information concerning post-op care. Instructions included the importance of massaging the breasts starting about one week after surgery. Though my breasts were tender and a bit swollen, I did begin massaging as intructed and didn't notice anything unusual at first. My surgery was in January, and I would say that by the very beginning of March I began to be able to feel the implant, and by mid March I could see it. It is especially visable when I lift my arm, however, it can be felt at all times. I did not have the opportunity to discuss why this happens with my surgeon, and am still wondering. I had never heard the term "bottoming out", but I'm certainly familiar with the condidtion now! Are you experiencing the same problem?

Hi J Weaver

I don't think that I'm experiencing the same thing, but I would like to know the signs (if there are any.)
I'm really concerned about bottoming out. If there's something I could do to prevent it, please let me know.

Sorry, I really don't have enough information about the condition or what causes it to offer you any advice. By all means, discuss any and all of your concerns with your surgeon. My breast augmentation was one of several procedures that I have had with my doctor. I admit that I didn't research this particular procedure well. I think that because I am comfortable and familiar with my doctor, and her level of skill, that I just proceded without a whole lot of thought. This was a mistake. I would say that your best defense against any complication taking you by surprise is information and support from your surgeon.

"Bottoming out" is when your skin stretchs to accomodate the increased bulk. The bulk then slides or falls below the nipple line.

In other words, sagging.

Women with larger breasts tend to get this normally as they age or after they have children.

I believe "bottoming out" happens less if the implants are under the muscle instead of on top.

I was told it happens more w/ unders because the implant slips.

I have visited a few other websites and find that all of the factors mentioned here seem to apply, it just depends on the individual. In the end, though, corrective surgery is necessary. Any advice on what I can expect as far as cost? I imagine the doctor will not expect to be paid for her services (I could be real wrong about that) but what about hospital and other charges? I was able to locate my implant manufacturer's web-site, and there was a brief statement posted there that when implants "slip" out of place it is because they were not placed correctly during surgery. Another site said that it is not the surgeon's fault, simply a risk that you take when you opt for this procedure. It's hard to know where the doctor's responsibility (at least monetarily) begins and ends.

Hi J Weaver,
I'm sorry to hear that. How many cc's did you doctor have you go and were they smooth or textured impants? Since my surgery I have bottomed out. I hear that it is due to the pocket being mage too large or that the implants are too heavy for the person to support. My doctor made me feel that it was my fault. She said she would fix it if it didnt fix itself by wearing an uderwire bra. I had my surgery 2 years ago so it wont fix itself. She wanted to put suters under the impant to hold it up. I went to another doctor and he thought that she should have realized that this would happen. Since i went so big so fast and that the impants were not textured. I'm sure the sooner it is caught the better. Mine have really dropped since its been 2 years. let me know how she plans on fixing them. right know i am looking into different surgons, and researching more on bottoming out. Good luck Kel
