I had pre cancer approx 18 years ago and had a cone biop - I then had another positive smear 8 years ago and had to have a hysterectomy. I didn't have any children so took a second opinion but because it was full blown cancer it was the right thing to do. Since then I have gone to the doctors for annual smears of the cavity. Each year I have been challenged on this by the nurse and last night she was most insistant that I could not get cancer again because I have no womb. I'm not convinced and intend to raise this with my doctor.
Has anyone else experienced similar or am I just being paranoid wanting an annual smear?

I don't think you're being paranoid at all. It sounds like you have read up on this and you are taking control of your health by ensuring you have the necessary tests to make sure you don't end up with vaginal cancer. The HPV virus can attach to the vaginal wall, it is rare, but it does happen. I know when I was contemplating hysterectomy with my gyn she submitted a report saying I would only need paps for two years after the hysterectomy then I wouldn't need them anymore. Right (not!). From the research I have read, I would continue with annual exams. As for the nurse, I would search out some information online, print it off and hand it to her the next time she gives you a hard time. Maybe she should think about what it would be like for her to go unscreened and then find out too late that something could have been prevented! (Sorry, I feel rather strongly on this...)
Hope this helps a little bit!

Just got back from the doctors and have had the argument. The doctor claims that even if they send my smears in they wont be processed. I've now been refered to a specialist to 'see if he can convince me!'.

At this point, I think I'd have a consultation with a gynelogical oncologist, to get the best information. I'd also consider changing doctors. You shouldn't have to argue your case with a doctor or a nurse. They should only be understanding and aid you in finding answers to your confusion and not make you feel like you are being too careful. I'd be feeling the same way as you.
