Hi everyone, I had a bunionectomy and hammertoe surgery Mar 23rd and I haven't fully gotten the feeling back in one of my toes, also with all the exercise I'm doing with my toes I can't get them to touch the floor, they seem to stick up. I haven't been able to find a shoe yet, and my scars are very ugly. If anyone can relate and give me some information, please do so.
Thanks!

I had bunion surgery June 10th.. I still can't get my big toe down either.. but my doctor said that is not uncommone because there is swelling under the toe that can take weeks and weeks to fully go away. Mine is slowly getting better. As for the loss of feeling.. can you feel when you touch your toes or is it that you can't move them? I know when I had my first foot surgery.. tailor bunionectomy on my right foot about 11 years ago.. I couldn't move my small toe for about a year. It can sometimes take a long time for the nerves to fully grow back. I can feel all my toes at the moment, but I still have some loss of feeling on the top of my foot near the incision.

Hi Sukie,
I just got off the phone with my doctor because my toe next to big toe, is sticking up. I had a bone spur in my baby toe removed June 17th, I elected to keep my bunion because it was not causing pain (I think I regret that decision). At the time of surgery the doctor made a small incision at the base of the second toe, supposedly to give big toe and second toe enough room. But the second toe is sticking up!!!
He told me to get some 1 inch bandage tape, and tape it in a criss cross at the base of the toe, so that when as it heals it will heal in the right position. Maybe that can help you.

You will get the feeling back............give it time. I massage my scars as soon as possible, it helps to get feeling and makes it easier for me in the long run so it doesnt bother me if they get touched..................it feels weird at forst but I really think it helps................

My surgery was May 25 - that's only 6 weeks ago! I'm still in my cam-walker and have only just started little exercises.
This is my second foot. I did the first one in January. It takes a while for your big toe to touch the floor. You have to be patient. I know it seems like a long time, but this is nothing! Just keep working it. You can't expect results overnight - of course the scar is ugly! You can't rush this recovery - just relax and do what your doc says. My first foot is great now, but I still treat my scar every day and do my toe exercises.

Thanks, I know I'm being impatient. What type of shoe did you find to wear on your first foot, and is it comfortable? My doctor want me to find a shoe, but I'm finding it very hard to do so.

Hi, at 6 weeks I was told to move into a sneaker. It will be hard to find one comfortable, as your foot is swollen. I bought a 1/2 size larger, and wide withd, and it was tight, but felt better after 10 minutes on. I think the sneaker helps reduce the swelling.

Hi Suki,
I had surgery on March 16th - a modified chevron bunionectomy- when I wake up in the morning my toe is still up a little but settles down during the day. As for shoes- I still have a problem cause of swelling - I bought some ROmika shoes online with a stretchy fabric top - they are like wearing slippers. Slip on shoes like Merrell, etc. are great - I have one pair of loafers that I can get into. Go to a shoe store like DSW late in the day to try on shoes - I started in the men's department and wore those for a month or so - the slipons look just like womens but the toe box is bigger - sometimes they are cheaper as well!
Good luck!

I am 4 weeks post op.. last week I wore a pair of Teva-like sandals with the velcro so I could adjust them to my feet. At my 4 week apptmnt Thursday, my doc told me to try and move to a sneaker. I managed to get it on Friday, I just had to really loosen the laces a lot though. I found some discomfort.. but I found I walked better in them. Of course around the house I have my slippers on...

I'm just 4 weeks post op and today was my first day in sneakers. Dr. said to wear them about 25% of the day this week, 50%next week and so on... but today I ended up out (and it was up in the 90"s ) and wore them most of the day. It's thrilling to walk around and know it will only get better. I too am obcessed with checking out feet, all t he flip flops and pointy stiletto shoes have me gaping! I find that most people seem to have great feet, but ours will be like a georgeous new accessory that we will want to show off everyday! We will certainly not take 'pretty feet" for granted!
