View Full Version : Handling On the Job Issues

I've been going threw my WD during work this week. Not the smartest thing to do but I'm out of vacation time. Anyway, I willingly told my managers what my problem was a couple months ago. I also told them of my plan to quit and get help. They have been very supportive and understanding thus far.
Here is my problem. Even though I told them I explained that this should be kept management confidential. A peer of mine just walked up to me and said - hang in there, you've almost got it kicked. Does that sound like she knows what’s going on to you? That means management talked! What should I do?

Molly,

That is really too bad to hear!!! You confiding in your mgmt team took guts, and for them to betray that confidence is not only morally wrong, but I'm pretty sure, unlawful to boot!! I really have no idea what to tell you to do, I have been a supervisor most of my life, and that is one thing that I was always so careful about, 'GOSSIP"... in any form is poison!! Maybe, if you still trust anyone in management, you should just go to them, and reiterate how important(Just in case they didn't know or forgot :) ) how vital it is that your business(and everyone elses's for that matter)...stay private. If that doesn't do any good, maybe you should just keep moving up the chain of command until you get results... Because, I can promise you, if the company you work for is of any size at all, some one some where knows what gossip can do to a business in very quick order!!!!! Just my thoughts, hope this helps some..... Just remember, you have all of us here pulling for you!!!!

Joan :)

In a word; Yes.

Or that means she has been there too. We are a growing breed, 15 Million strong I'm afraid.

Another thought; withdrawal is easy to spot a mile away to a lot of people thanks to movies like Requim and Trainspotting. Maybe she genuinely cares and will keep this confidential.

The only way to know for sure is to go have a casual chat with her and see if she says anything further that will confirm this. Since management is supportive you should be okay regardless.

By the way, WD at work? You braver than I. I'm locked away at home for 10 days just to be sure I could stay focused and sort comfortable. I couldn't imagine dealing with trying to be productive when my arms are flying all over the place. Just remember while you are doing this you may need to take a day or two (ideally you will be off this weekend) to get over the worst. This is THE most important thing you are going to do, and will save your life. If you need to be off a day or two to get through the rough patches, well do what you have to do. I would be a tragedy to let your job cause you a set back when you're already moving forward!

Good luck to you and keep us posted!

I talked with my manager and she says she hasn't heard that they know and did not tell them anything. I sent the following email to my managers:

I wanted to thank all of you for hanging in with me this week. I know I have not been at the top of my game. I have felt very supported and Ray's praying for me I believe did wonders for my body, which has kept me working - yeah!!!

I also wanted to let you know that I have told my co-workers that I am very sick, that it is serious, and that it may take a little while for me to get back to normal. I've left out why and hope that my peers will not find out so if you'd support that I'd REALLY appreciate it. Thanks again for all your love and support!

Guess that's all I can do at this point. I work in a small company as the HR manager so this could kill my credibility. I'm taking the weekend off and I'll make it through this then if I need to look for another job. Just keep goin'

Great attitude and exactly the way to deal with it. Home is much better. There when you break something in anger, well its yours. I seem to recall most companies have a "please, please don't break our stuff" policy, though as the HR expert you'd know about that more than me.

If you are doing this good today you should be fine.

Never make the assumption that someone in management spilled the beans on you.

Sometimes your colleagues are bluffing and say something to see your response. Also, if you had a bad addiction, guess what - it wasn't as big a secret as you might have thought it was.

My suggestions is to not over-react and do not assume that someone in management leaked the info. You could cause yourself more grief than you need right now.
