Hi, I'm almost 21 years old, and half of my life, I've despised my nose. When I was 10, I was hit in the head with a door, and I think it clipped my nose as well, and left a bit of a bump. I can't tell if my nose just started to grow big because of my genes, or the accident. I also suffer from depression, so I don't tend to like my physical appearance very much. But I am most uncomfortable with my nose, I cannot stand to look at it in pictures...I'm very tiny and petite and it just looks so huge. Can anyone tell me what they know about rhinoplasty? Costs and such? Thanks a lot.

I actually just went for my first consultation for a nose job I too am having a bumb removed, I went to someone in NYC I was quoted $9800 which is a bit on the high side but not for Manhattan. My Dr. also has a good reputation and this is not something you want to skimp on. Look for someone who only specializes in facial plastic surgery.

almost 10,000??? Lol that's funny. Anyway, anywhere else it's about 3,000. It can be done under local anestesia so you don't need to go to the hospital. That makes it nice. It also reduces risks as you are breathing for yourself as opposed to going under general anestia in the hospital, not to mention the huge hospital fees. Mine was not very painful, I was back to my normal activities in a week. Good luck, it's a wonderful thing.

Hi Tristesa,
I am 31 and had two rhinoplasties when I was 14 and
two more when I was around 23.
When I was 14 I knew nothing much about it and come to find out the surgeon my folks took me to was not
board certified yet. big mistake.
My nose had a very very bulbous tip as well as well as a large profile and wide dorsum. To be honest I have only seen one person in my life who had a nose as large as mine; so to say the least, my surgery would be the challenge of the century to any surgeon.
When I was 23 I went to the Chief of Plastic Surgery
at Mass Eye and Ear. He came highly recommended and did a good job reducing the size - but just not enough.
From the above I would say the two most important aspects of rhinoplasty are (1) Finding a very skilled surgeon who's specialty is rhinoplasty.
(2) Being as precise as possible on what you want done.
getting digital imaging would be excellent to confer
the results that you want. I bought my own PS imaging software as my next endeavor I am not leaving anything up to the "aesthetic" eye of any doctor.
If you keep reading up on this board you find a plethorae of valuable information on rhinoplasty.
When you start putting a list of doctors together its good to see before and after photos as well as checking credentials. I use the photos to weed out results that I dont think were top notch.
But also - especially with rhinoplasty as each nose is so unique - when someone suggests a surgeon because they had a good rhinoplasty with him/her - you need to know what they were having changed on their nose and is that what you are having?
I would value a surgeon more if I could see before and after photos of noses like mine. A doctor could be great at removing a hump and not too good with nasal tips. So its good to find a reputable doctor who has
performed the specifics of a rhinoplasty that you seek.
My suggestion is to start my identifying what you want changed and then putting a list of doctors together for consults - and go to many before making a decision.
hope this is helpful

Now my curiosity is peaked about prices.
I never thought about what the price increases have been over the years.
I believe my first Rhino back in the mid 80's was
in the 3000's, and then 4.5k around my revision
in '93 at Mass Eye and Ear. What is it now in the 5's?
thx

I was quoted in the 9s for NYC I hear it is about 6 outside of the city, it depends who you go to. The guy that quoted me is director of facial plastice & reconstructive surgery at Cornell medical so basically you are paying for his reputation.

I just had my 3rd from a top doc in NYC with major graff work from my ears and it was 7000.00. I also consulted with 3 other docters and it was all the same about 6000.00 -7000.00 without anesthisa and o/r fees.

Santa Maria California. Maybe you should think about getting surgery outside of NYC, the prices there are ridiculous!

I am 4 weeks post-op and very pleased with my new nose, which cost under $4K. I went to several PS north of Philadelphia (Bucks County) and the prices were all under $5K. Prices from $3750-4500. More expensive doctors south of Phila. (the main line---if you know where that is) were around $6K-7500. The most important factor though is EXPERIENCE. How many noses has he done? I picked one who had been a rhino specialist for 12 years and had a HUGE photo album.

My price was including the anesthesia, he has also been practicing for over 20 years and only specializes in facial surgery especially the nose.

I had rhinoplasty five years ago in Massachusetts and the surgeon's fee alone was $6000.
I only consulted with one doctor, but mine had a great reputation which I knew ahead of time. He was kind of a jerk and a bit arrogant, but he knew what the heck we was doing, believe me.
Although I did have a few breathing problems afterward, which can happen no matter how good the doctor is, and I had a secondary septoplasty six months later from a regular ENT the plastic surgeon was associated with, and that fee was only like $1600 or something like that, which insurance covered since it was directly breathing related. There was some cartiledge in my nose that had begun growing back in a deformed position and it was blocking one of my nasal passageways.
Anyway, after that second surgery my breathing was perfect, has remained perfect and the shape was what I'd always dreamed of (I had a HUGE dorsal hump and now it's all gone forever!)
However, there are a lot more expenses than just the initial fees. If a surgeon's fees covers the in office surgery and everything that's great, but if it doesn't, watch out! Just out of curiosity, I went back and added up every single expense from both surgeries all together, whether or not it was covered by insurance, just to see what it all came to. After all the pre-surgery physicals, hospital expenses, fees, blood tests, post-op meds, etc, it all came to a whopping $25,000! So be VERY aware that all the "little" expenses can pile up fast! Fortunately, my insurance covered a hefty portion of all of it, but that is not the norm, I just got lucky. Most insurances won't pay a dime for anything elective and cosmetic!

I live in CT near NYC and both of my nose surgeries were almost 10,000.oo a peice when you include the doctors fee, the surgical center/hospital fee, and the anesthesiologist.
That is a realistic FULL price for an uncomplicated cosmetic Rhinoplasty.
At Least where I live..
I would guess large Cosmo areas like LA, Chicago, Dallas would be the same..
I am 60 minutes to Manhatten so any good Doc near me is always Bick bucks..

Dr. Lawrence Kirwan did my nose both times.
His fee, and the hospital fee, and the anesthesia added up to the fee I explained above..
He is the best! Good person and talented surgeon.
good luck,
Barb
