Hi all

my baby is 3 weeeks old, and he has colic, and possibly gastric reflux.

Someone had mentioned giving him probiotics and that would stop the problem.

Anyone know about the safety of giving probiotics to a newborn????

I am at the point of being willng to try it, because seeing him writhing in pain and screaming, is making me lose it.

He also has a LOT of gas and passes it but it's painful for him.

Thanks all for any help

Here are some things that help that you may have already tried, but I thought I would mention them just in case you haven't.

1. Give him mylicon drops (OTC) before each feeding.

2. Burp him before as well as during and after each feeding.

3. If you are nursing consider taking a close look at your diet. Dairy is often a culprit for severe gas pains in a baby.

4. If you are formula feeding consider asking the ped about a change.

5. Have your baby sleep on his tummy or in an upright position (in the carseat, bouncy or swing). Lying flat on the back will make the pain much worse.

6. Try laying your baby on his back and bicycling his legs back and forth.

If none of these measures work and no one suggests anything else that does (its been five years since our youngest was a baby) I would call the doctor.

Nancy has some great suggestions. Our DD was VERY colicky and although it has not gone away, it has gotten considerably better with several of these suggestions. We use the mylicon drops at each feeding and burp her during and afterwards. Bicycling her legs is a HUGE help and she really enjoys it too. After a couple of minutes, we usually have her laughing.
Hang in there, it is supposed to peak around 6 weeks and then get better and we've also noticed a change in her recently.

Also there an herbal supplement called Primadophilus. It is made for babies to help the digestive system and help with bad bacteria build up. The good part about it is that it is made for infants and will help with colic and reflux. We use this stuff and mylicon for DS.

My cousin's son had reflux and the doctor finally prescribed zantac syrup. Completely different child. He was just in sooo much pain all he could do was scream and cry. I'd talk to your doctor about this instead of messing around with home remedies that could end up doing more harm.
