Anyone tried GNC's Liver Formula containing milk thistle and NAC? Any information about product would be helpful.

Hi DK2005--
Welcome to the boards!!
I don't know much abt supplements or the liver--but I thought you should get a response form someone. There's a poster here "TheHappyMan"- who is VERY knowledgable about supplements for the liver. I know he's mentioned milk thistle to other ppl--saying it brought his liver enzymes down. Hopefully he'll see this and post for you...if anyone will know it would be him!! HappyMan...???

I am not a medical doctor, however, i would consult with my hepatologist before taking any vitamins... although vitamins are good for the general public, people with chronic liver problems, and cirrhosis, need to be careful with regards to what they ingest. there are many minerals that are not easy for the liver to tolerate.
there is no conclusive information with regards to milk thistle. a limited study using people with alcohol related liver problems, it did show some relief. the general opinion is that it wont hurt, but it probably will do no good either.
there are several books sold in major bookstores on liver disorders. i know there is one written by a world class hepatologist out of ny, with the blessing of the american liver foundation, that addresses these issues. i would pick up her book.
one problem with vitamins is that they are processed in the liver. if your liver is not working well the minerals and vitamins do not process correctly.
i did just attend a conference that addressed this issue. the hepatologists who spoke came from Baylor in Houston, University of Pittsburgh Liver Transplant Unit, University of California at Davis, and more... these are some of the best doctors and liver research people in the world, and they all agreed on this subject.
all the best!!!!!

I've heard nothing but good things about milk thistle, insofar as protecting the liver and also helping regenerate healthy liver cells.

I've heard nothing but good--altho I don't take it myself.

Hi DK2005 -
In answer to your question, out of all the "herbs" and "supplements", Milk Thistle has the reputation of being the most helpful for the liver. I am not familiar with GNC's specific "formula" but they are considered to be a reputable source of Vitamins and Supplements.
Milk thistle is the most widely recognized natural remedy for liver health. Nearly every medical doctor in the USA is familiar with milk thistle and some even recommend it. In Germany, doctors routinely prescribe standardized milk thistle extract as a medicine for hepatitis patients.
I know firsthand that it can significantly lower elevated liver enzymes and has been shown in tests to protect the liver against certain toxins. :) :) :) I have been taking it every day for years.

i would disagree respectfully.... while doctors dont think milk thistle is bad for you, there have been no double blind studies showing that it works. the NIH(National Institute of Health) will begin a study on milk thistle soon... we will know then.
I can tell you that the liver books at most book stores endorsed by major hospitals or the American Liver Foundation will support this statement. take a look for yourself.....
Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, New England Medical Center, Baylor, Columbia... would all agree with this theory. No evidence to the contrary, however no evidence that it works....
The conference I just attended featured one of the leading Autoimmune Liver disease researchers in the world. He is at University of California at Davis, he is doing research on PBC/AIH and other autoimmune liver disorders.... he stated that although there have been efforts to replicate these studies in a lab, no one at a respected hospital/research institution has been able to do it....
