Does anyone know if you can be a smoker, when having a tummy tuck? I do know, that with certain procedure's you HAVE TO quit! I had a horrible experience, being a smoker when i had my breast lift done! I did quit----but i guess not long enough (i quit 2 months before). Just wondering???? I want to make sure that i have plenty of time, being a non smoker, before having this done.

I wonder the same. I hear different doctors suggest different amounts of time you should not have smoked prior to surgery. I don't think it depends on the surgery...doesn't it have more to do with your breathing under anesthesia?

I smoke too...heavily actually (2 packs a day approx). It's going to be hard to quit long enough before my surgery..I actually wonder if it is all that bad to go under anesthesia as a smoker? Why is it so bad? I am still young (22) so I'm sure I will breathe just fine.

I'm having a nasal surgery done and the dr told me quit two weeks before surgery (that's gonna be tough!!!) You have to call and ask your doctor. They tell you this b/c smoking decreases the body's blood vessels and oxygen this can affect your results. It doesn't matter how young and/or healtyh you are. 2 months sounds like plenty of time, but ask your doctor concerning this procedures. My doc told me not to smoke for at least a week after. AAAAAAAHHH! Only a smoker will understand...how am I gonna make it for 3 weeks?

Whatever you do QUIT SMOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If, your doc tells you to! I have horror stories, about what happened to me. The reason i asked this ? is i was curious how long someone quit, if they had a tummy tuck. For instance, some PS, have told me that only certain surgeries....breast augmentation (i smoked) nothing happened. Breast lift (i smoked) HORRIBLE RESULTS....and i DIDNT HEAL!!! My 3rd surgery....Breast lift redone (quit smoking 2 months prior) DIDNT HEAL............ results are better!!! I guess, you just shouldnt smoke!!!! I went in for consultation for labiaplasty----my PS, told me you dont have to quit smoking! IM CONFUSED!!!

Now I'm really confused too. I went to another consultation today and the lady told me I don't need to quit. She said it doesn't affect healing, just during the anestesia process it may make it worse. She said, you should cut down maybe, but its ok. But everywhere I looked online it says don't smoke at least 2 weeks before. The best thing is, you're right, don't smoke cause you want to look right and heal properly. You won't look back and regret quitting for a month.

Alsasar............

My 2nd surgery...............the PS told me to "cut back" i broke open and bled for a year, and a few years later found out that this guy wasnt even a PS, and have many law suits against him, and killed a patient! I DID NOT research this doc!!!! So, i had what he'd done to me fixed by another PS!!!! I DID research and he is excellent!!!!! What happened???? I DIDNT HEAL!!! Like i said, i quit 2 months before surgery (he told me 6 wks) he was SHOCKED to see what happened. So all toll my breasts costs $20,000, in a 7 yr period! My 3rd surgery was this May, and i just started to heal! I like the shape of my breasts now, but im not totally happy with the scarring! Seeing how much this surgery costs. So, please, you are better off to quit! This may have only happened to me......but in May, i was posting ALL OVER the place, about my nightmare.........trying to warn other women about this risk! It just isnt worth it! Smoking was and had to be one of the hardest things to quit, in my life! I feel so much better now though. Oh, i also smoked for 18 years! Maybe that had something to do with it too. If you have nay more ?, please ask me! :)

Thanks so much. I'll quit asap. It can only benefit me. You're right, its just not worth it. You went through a terrible ordeal, I can't believe it. Did you quit cold turkey? How much did you smoke? I know you said 18 years, that's a long time. I smoked for 10, quit for an year and a half (using the patch)and started up again in the last year and a half. Now I smoke 7-10 cigs a day. I'm nervous about the irritability/anger I'll experience more than anything. I hate when I get all mean cause of nicoteine withdrawl, I don't want to hurt others. Thanks again though, and sorry about your awful dilemma.

This sucks!!!

I don't know how I'm going to quit! I'm not sure if I can do it....

Princess72, are you sure that the problem you had with healing was related to smoking? Maybe it was just the a**hole doctor you had?

I agree with ya BlndBtrfly. Quitting IS gonna be tough, I don't know how I'm gonna either. My plan is 3 weeks before surgery, to taper off, than stop 2 weeks prior. My surgery coordinator said you don't need to quit, she didn't when she had hers (nose job) and I asked her if it would affect healing and she said, its good to cut down, quit if I can but she said she's been overseeing surgeries for 13 years and never saw complications due to smoking. But I had another guy, a surgeon, tell me I have to quit 2 weeks prior, I begged, not even one? He said, no!
In hindsight, you'll never regret quitting for 3-4 weeks, but may regret not. Plus, we have the rest of our lives to smoke all we want. Princess72 sounds pretty adament on advising us not to smoke and she is a smoker, she knows how hard it is.
Yes, it will be tough. [If any youngsters r reading this and contemplating starting to smoke, this is what u'll go through. Don't start cause its a trap and a battle your whole life!]

I am SO HAPPY..........people are seeing my post and i dont even think my ? was answered :) . Anywayz, i smokes a pack a day (or more) and yes this happened cuz of the smoking. The doc i found to take care of me 3rd time around has been on 20/20 and helps people all across the world. I know you all know about the risks....BUT.....smoking is huge!!! I started the patch 2 months before surgery, in 19 days i quit the patch-----i forgot to put it on when i got out of the shower. Hours had pasted and i just kept it off! According to my PS, i couldnt have the patch on 6 wks prior either. So, if that is what you use, make sure it is off, plenty of time before surgery! I dont know what type of surgery you all are having.....but, it is so worth it to quit! I WANT TO go back to smoking right now-----but, this was the 1st time i ever tried to quit and it's been almost 5 mo. What keeps me away from them????? Going back to that 1st week!!!! I cant handle it again. Believe me-----after what happened, and i was laid up.....OMG....did i wanna smoke. I know my posts are scarring you, and im not trying to----you just need to know what CAN HAPPEN!! Really, im not sure how much they really know, about smoking????? My wonderful, popular, been doing this for years and years doc, told me 6 wks. After what happened to me, he said this must have happened, from your history of being a smoker. Hmmmmm, ya think????
