I am very nervouse about my t&a that I am having this thursday (2 days). I am worried first about the anestesia. I have read about it and it seems they don't really know what it does. I don't like the idea of being put to sleep. I actually have been scaring myself ****less by reading death rates and stuff. Also I am scared about the procedure. Not the post operative bleeding but the actually surgery. Iam assuming that they are doing the traditional surgery where they cut the 100% of the tonsil off and all of the adnoid. I noticed that the procedure to cut the adnoid is by placing a mirror into the throat and aligning the knife (forget the true name of this tool) and they removing the mirror and cutting the adnoid. This is done BLIND! I believe they burn the tonsils off. Anyways, can anyone help me out I am extremely nervous. I am a medical person and like to know the facts.

I can't help you with the actual surgery, but I have had other types of surgery. Really, there is nothing to worry about. You will go in and change into a gown and lay on a bed in the pre-op area. The nurse will start an IV, then the anesthesiologist and doctor will both come by to talk to you. If you are really nervous, they may give you something to relax you. Then you get wheeled into the operating room and scoot over onto the bed in there. Next thing you know, you're in the recovery room. The meds they use go through the IV and are very quick, so you won't remember any of it or have any feelings of going to sleep. It's just one minute you're in the OR waiting, then the next minute you're in the recovery room asking if it's all over. I have had two surgeries, and I didn't have any problems with either of them. They both went just like that. And don't worry about being asleep, because you won't be aware of a thing, and the anesthesiologist will be taking good care of you. That is the only job that this person has, is to sit there and make sure that you are getting the correct medications and breathing okay and all that. So just try to relax. Good luck!

thanks alot, that makes me feel alot better. I just needed to hear it from someone. I like the fact that I wont be aware of time, I am assuming then you don't dream during anesthesia. Anyways, I most likely will ask for something to calm my nerves but I am relieved to hear positive things about anesthesia. Comforting to know the doctor stays there as well.

One second, you are lying there waiting to begin, the next you are in recovery. No dreams, no recollection of falling asleep, just one big blank slate.

hi, i just want to tell you that i am only 15 and have been under anesthesia twice already, one time it was a small operation(removing some teeth) but i had to be put under because mine had deep roots and they had to cut into my gums, and another i had a big operation just a few months ago then i did talk to my anesthesiaologist(hope i spelled that right!) before ,and both times i went through beautifully! No complaints, honestly if there was a fun part of the surgeries that would be it! Because when i woke up i had had the best sleep in years!!!!Also..lol.... i was scared to death because both times when i had woken up i thought i was still awake and they were just about to operate on me not asleep so if that happens to you don't worry!
Without these experiences i would have never thought of pursuing a career of anesthesiology! The only problem? The years and years of university i have to go through!!!!!!!!!!

well, I am back! i just wanted to say thank you both for your help. I read both posts this morning and it made me feel alot better. Also, I talked thouroughly with the anestesialogist and he explained it all and well I over reacted. It was so simple and i felt safe the whole 1 second i was out (what it felt like haha) I actually was given a thing before the anestesia and that basically made me not know where i was and then they put me under. It was amazing and simple no one should worry about this stuff it was awesome! Anyways, I am rambling because I am very drugged out so thank you!
