Has anyone on here been given provera to start your periods again? My doctor prescribed it for me and I'm just wondering about side effects from it. If anyone has taken it please let me know. Thanks!

I took provera for 10 days to jump start my period again. Basically, it's progesterone in pill form, which is a hormone needed to get periods (estrogen being another). If you have enough estrogen, then the pill will induce a period- at least once (after that there is no guarantee!) Sometimes the pill will 'remind' the body whats to do to get a period and you will get one from then on. Other times (as was the case with me), it just supplies the hormone, induces a period, and that's it.

The side effects are listed and are pretty standard. The thing is, when I went on it (10 days), it induced a period, but i felt HORRIBLE. The feeling started towards the end of the 10 days, lasting till after my period was done (so about a 1-2 wk period of time). It wasn't just cramps or nausea, it was so much worse...like a stomach virus x10, unlike anything I've felt before. I can't say 100% if it was because of the provera, but it's highly unlikely that I got some virus thing at the exact same time I took the pills. Based on that, I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't force your body into anything it's not ready to do. You period will come when your body is ready, at a healthy weight and healthy mind set...I don't agree that taking pills every month or whatever is the right way to go about it..but each to her own!

P.S. What is your height/weight? How long have you not gotten your period?

Thanks for the replies!! I'm around 100-102 pounds and I'm 5'1". I'm 20 years old. I haven't had a "real" period since before my pregnancy and my daughter will be a year old in a week and a half! My last period before my pregnancy I believe was in October of 2003. I had my daughter in July of 2004 and I bled for a long time after she was born...almost 3 months. Then when it stopped I never started my periods. I took an emergency contraceptive in December (plan B) and it did make me have a period (not a real one) which I started about a week after I took the pill. But I never had another one after that. I weighed 110 before my pregnancy and only gained 15 pounds during my pregnancy. When I came home from the hospital I weighed 115 and it took only a week to get back to 110. But I just kept losing and losing until March of this year, I was down to near 90 pounds (because of my ED). So far I haven't had any side effects from the Provera. I've only taken 2 pills though. I have 3 more to take because my doctor only put me on it for 5 days. I really hope it doesn't make me terribly sick! For one thing if it did I would probably lose weight which I don't need. Anyway thanks again for the replies!

I too have needed Provera to induce a per. I had been on bcps for years and years so I didn't know what to expect when I went off of them. While we want our bodies to work naturally on their own, when they don't, it is good to induce a per. every 6 weeks or so to prevent uterine cancer (from your lining builiding up). Hopefully it will kick start your body into doing its thing. Hang in there
