I got diagnosed with TMJ yesterday. I have had a constant headache for as long as I can remember and while at a routine dental check-up was told the headaches were probably caused by TMJ which was then confirmed by a Doctor. I was prescribe 500mg of Naproxen twice a day but really want my headaches to stop. I was told I have a severe case, what kind of treatment normally follows for this?

I suppose some investigation will need to be carried out to assess why you have TMJ. Are you a grinder and clencher? Have you experienced some form of Trauma on your Jaw? If you do grind then the 1st thing that will probably happen will be for you to wear a mouthguard at night. Maybe then you will have a splint made to wear. You may even be referred to a physiotherapist. The last thing you want to do is surgery. Run a mile if that's suggested! Sersiously this should be the absolute last option becasue the problems can be made worse.

I agree with mcruk. Splint therapy, Chiropractics, Physical Therapy and Massage Therapy are some of the therapies usually chosen for this disorder. I too, would run if someone suggested surgery. Good luck to you.
