Has anyone ever had a varicose vein removed by surgery?? I had a vein in the back of my knee injected by schlerotherapy a few years ago but it did nothing so I decided to have it surically removed two months ago. Ever since the surgery I have had nothing but problems! My leg looks like I have been hit with a baseball bat and it hurts like crazy. It looks worse and feels worse now more than the actual vein ever did. It feels like there is a huge lump underneath my skin where the vein was removed. Anyone else ever go through this?????????

Hi JustPeachy
I'm not sure if I'll be able to help much, I know that Schlerotherapy may only last about a year or two, depending. I'm not sure about the surgery, one of my friends had surgery a couple of years ago, I think it went okay, not really sure though. I'll find out and see what I can find out and I'll let you know. What kind of surgery did you have, stripping, EVLT, ect? I myself have been doing a lot of research into different kinds of treatments for my Varicose Veins. How did your Schlerotherapy work for you, did it work all? Did you have any side effects from it? I'll be talking to my friend tomorrow, I'll find out and I'll let you know.

I had schlerotherapy 7 years ago for a big varicose vein on the back of my leg. It worked great but another one formed right above it. The new one that formed is the one that I had removed by surgery. I did see a cosmetic surgeon Monday and he said the doctor didn't close the vein off after he took it out. He also said he could fix my leg without surgery. Yeah!! The only thing is that I have to pay out of pocket to have it fixed. Choose your doctor carefully!!! I wouldn't have surgery; I would do schlerotherapy.

Hi JustPeachy,
I am so sorry the doctor you went to did this to you. I hope you get better soon and that everything goes okay.
I've found a Vascular doctor that will do Schlerotherapy, I've been trying to find people to talk to that have had different types of treatments. Did the treatment for Schlerotherapy hurt when you had it done, and did you have any side effects from it (staining, allergic reaction, ect.)?
Some people say it's worth it and some say it's not, I guess I'll have to do it and take my chances. I wish there was a board just for Vascular Disease and Vascular surgery.

Hi
I loved the schlerotherapy. There were no problems at all. You can't even tell there was a vein there and there are no scars or staining. There really isn't any recovery time except you have to wear the support hose for a while. I just wish I would have had the same thing done for the vein behind my knee instead of letting a doctor remove it! I will know from now on!!! Good luck to you!

I've had both--many veins injected, and a vein stripped. The problem with sclerotherapy is that your blood has to reroute and sometimes it relocates to another weak vein, initiating another varicose vein just like the one that was treated. Nevertheless, I was very satisfied and only got one new varicose vein nearby out of the many that were injected.
The vein stripping saved me from many more years of pain. My vein was so bad I would almost scream if anything touched it, and my leg ached badly all the time. I have little railroad track scars the length of my leg from the surgery (and that was 29 years ago!) but it is a small price to pay for feeling so much better and not having a purple worm-looking thing sitting on my leg anymore.
BTW, veins above the knee are less responsive to injections. All mine were below the knee. I would get another vein stripped in a heartbeat if I had to do it again.

Hi poreoilyme,
Thanks for the advice, would you get your veins injected again if you had to? Did you have any allergic reactions? And how long did your injections last for, before reopening again? I'm thinking of having it done this fall, really confused though and nervous.
Thanks again!!

Dear Airees
How big are the veins that you are wanting to have done? I will tell you that sclerotherapy will not work for very large varicose veins. The recurrence rate is very high. There are so many different ways to have them removed now. I was reading that they remove them by laser now also. I do know that they don't like to do "vein stripping" anymore. The doctors told me that 2 months ago when I had that vein removed from the back of my knee. I really wish you lots of luck. I would just stay away from having the vein surgically removed. I really wish I wouldn't have had it done!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi JustPeachy,
My veins are coming out but not that bad yet, I want to get them injected before they get worse. They're only about 5 or 6cm wide and are only raised about 2 to 3cm the most and run from my knee to my ankle. What do you think? Do they seem too big? I've already seen a doctor that says they're not yet.

Hi JustPeachy,
I was just wondering if you went to the doctor yet for your leg that was hurting you with the vein that was removed? How are you feeling?

Hi airees,
I haven't been back to the doctor yet. I am still trying to find the "best" way to fix this problem. I am just scared because I don't want to go through any more pain. I should have just left the darn vein there and just accepted it!! But I guess I am a little vain (no pun intended...lol). It has been almost 3 months since the surgery and it still hurts and it looks like a huge bruise. I am in real estate school right now so I haven't had much time for anything else. I figured the best time to have something done about it is during the winter. Thanks for asking about my leg and what have you decided to do about yours? I know it is really hard being so young and having these things. I am 28 and have dealing with this since I was 20. Good luck to you!!!
