I had an abdominal hysterectomy about 7 years ago. I had fibroids and endometriosis. My uterus and cervix was removed but I still have my ovaries. The actual surgery and healing process took me about 5 weeks. There is pain and the first few weeks are hard since it is major surgery. I could not stand up straight and could not drive for 2 weeks. I mostly stayed in bed and took my pain medication as needed. You will definitely need some help if you have small children, if you need the abdominal hysterectomy.
I have had no problems since I have had the hysterectomy and feel fine. I still have my ovaries so I do not need to take any type of hormone pills. All surgery involves some pain however everyone has different thresholds and be sure to take your pain meds before the pain sets in, you will be fine.
Best wishes.

I had a total hysterectomy (with abdominal incision) last summer. the nurses had me up and walking about 3hrs after I returned to my room from recovery. It is important to walk and move around. The pain was tolerable-I had a pump, so I had control on when I needed pain meds. Once I was home I just made sure to take the oral meds regularly-I was probably off of them completely after about 5 days at home. I was in the hospital for 2 nights, 3 days. I flew to Chicago with my family 2 weeks after surgery-we went to my sister's home-not sightseeing! I was concerned about my surgery but it really was not too bad-walking hepls! MJ
