View Full Version : Bunionectomy- post op shoes?

I had an Austin bunionectomy w/ Akin 4 weeks ago. I'm still in the airboot with about 75% weight bearing, then next week I'm full weight bearing in the boot. After that, though, my podi wants me in an athletic shoe.
While this is excellent news (!), I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations as far as brands? Particular types (for instance, would a runner be good? Hiking shoe? cross-trainers? I'm at a loss...) I have shoes that look like athletic shoes, but you know, they're just cute. Not really supportive at all, so I'm in the market for a good shoe.

I haven't posted at all, but this board has been a tremendous help in my recovery (and a good resource pre-op, too). Many thanks!

Very wide athletic shoes, crocs, Merrills, all of these are great with very good foot support. Your foot will be bigger because of swelling for a while, I went up a 1/2 size til the swelling finally subsided.

Stephanie--Sharon's right pick a wide shoe with a big toe box. I had to also go a 1/2 size larger. It was very painful to try on shoes and some I got my foot only part way in and gave up because they were too tight. I ended up with Sketchers but also wore Clarks too.

Thanks for the help. I have a pair of Birks (clogs) that I tried on and remarkably, could shove my big fat foot into, so those may be the first real shoe I get into. Good arches at the very least, and they're already broken in. I was looking at some Asolos, but I'm pretty sure they run big and I'm not sure about foot size with swelling- especially when we're talking about two weeks from now. Add that to not really wanting to try anything on... yet.
thanks again!
steph
