My doctor wants to do surgery to remove my anal abscess. I like to avoid go under the knife if at all possible. He told me the only way to completely cure the anal abscess is surgery. The abscess does not give me too much of trouble for now. I have it for about 3 months now, about every couple of weeks, it bursts and some pus leak out and it would heal in couple of days. It between, there is no pain and some itching that I can live with. My question is would the abscess get worse over time if I don't doing anything about it. Is it true it would never get better without the surgery. Can someone share your anal abscess surgery and recovery experience?

IF it is a pylonidal [sp?] cyst, yes, you will probably need the surgery. I had what I thought was abcess/boil for 6 months. Same scenario as you - pus would come out, pain ease up, then got bigger & more pus...etc. I used EVERY method known & some I made up [onion poultice, sea salt, sitz baths, black drawing salve & more] it finally STOPPED giving up any pus at all & cyst got bigger & harder.
Had no insurance at the time so had not been to Dr. When it got to the point I could NOT sit I went to emergency room, laying on my side in back in of car! Dr. used local anesthetic to lance it & relieve some pressure & scheduled me for removal of the core of the cyst. Said it would just keep coming back if core was not removed. The core was quite deep in - NO WAY "home treatment" will get that out!
Good luck & Great health!

You really should have surgery to clean out and drain fully the abcess. I had 6 of these over a 2 year peorid, and a couple actually burst themselves, which is not that great as it can lead to infection, and in my case an anal fistuala, which is something you don't want to get. You can have the surgery under local anesthetic, and usually requires a drain for a week, but it could be alot worse! These abcesses have a habit of recurring, so the way you address your first one could save you from having more.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advise. I would reconsider this surgery while I still have medical insurance. I sure don't want to get worse. Can you share your recovery experience? Any complication? Any affect on BM? My abscess is outside, I can feel the small lump with my finger.

Hi Kato,
No complications at all. I was about 275 lbs. at the time & was worried about the healing process, because obviously "everything was squished together" back there! Doc said just to be sure to KEEP AREA CLEAN. He also told me to use "stool softener" for ease in bowel movements...NOT laxatives!
Mine was also outside, just on anal rim. It may be that you have a boil & not the pylonidal cyst that I had...what does your doc say? Seems if he wants to do surgery it must be the cyst; otherwise they can lance the boil in the office. They "spray" a cold, numbing, anesthetic on it & just lance it!
Good luck!

My family doctor said it was anal abscess and will need surgery to completely cure it. However, he also suggested me to see a GI specialist for second opinion and for that surgery if really needed.

Finally had an appointment to see a GI specialist last week. The doctor said I don't have an anal abscess but rather I have an anal pimple. What a relieve, I was worried sick about the surgery. She said just keep the area clean and dry and the lump should be gone in few weeks. She also recommeded use wet one to clean up instead of dry toilet paper.

Hey Kato,, how's your anal pimple now? But what's the difference?
Pimple,, Abscess,, ???
Pimple,, Abscess,, ???

It has completely gone for 2 weks now. No more problem. I don't know the different, but it appears the pimple can healed by itself while abscess won't go away on its own. You can google for anal pimple for more info.

i too have suffered with these abcesses ,infact i have had surgery four times.usually when they lance them it usually leaves you with a fistula, then that causes further problems later on. this is a complaint that men get more so than women. my father used to have them, so i guess that is why i get them.i went ten years between having the last two.i can now usually tell if one is brewing, and i take anti biotics which usually do the trick.i always use a bidet, after bowel movement, if not baby wipes.
the pain from these small abcesses is undescribable, and my heart goes out to anyone who suffers this pain.also the healing of them after surgery, being packed with gause every day as they have to heal from the inside out.
so for all you folk on here who have been through this pain,i say, well done.
me, i would rather have a baby than go through that pain!
