My 21 yr old son has been ill for over a year. Seemed to start after spring break last year. Biggest problem is tons of rectal mucous & constant urge for BM. He has had every test in the book....by 2 gastro spec....Final diagnosis is idiopathic proctitis. No meds have given him any relief. I am so concerned because he has lost 25lbs.....is afraid to eat & has difficulty sleeping. He will go to bed at night & sleep for maybe 4 or 5 hours.....then up every hour or so in the bahtroom. He was a big drinker before this started. He has been tested for celiac. Tomorrow we go to an allergist....I don't have much hope for any answers from him but i am desperate. Next step will be a 3rd gastro i guess.....My older son was diagnosed with IBS, but this son has constant problems.....Alot of upper gas. Sorry about the length of this but I am so sad........

I am no doctor, but alcohol doesn't help your system. Is your son still drinking? I hope not.

Does he have BM's or urges? Is he constipated?

I would probably try cleaning out his system first. He may have some kind of parasite living inside his intestines that could be causing his problems. I heard Oxy-Mega is good for cleansing parasites out of the human body. I would also take a probiotic enteric coated (Ruetri) to give the intestines some good bacteria.

I hope this helps, keep me posted on his progress.

Thank you for the suggestion. Yes.............my son is a 21 year old college student who does drink alcohol. I cannot stop him. He says there is no difference in his symptoms drinking or not. He took a 30 day prescription of flagyll and did not drink a thing. It looks like the Allergist has come up with nothing......He has an appointment with a 3rd gastro located in a teaching hospital in Sept. I have ordered the 2 things that you have suggested and will let you know the outcome. I think the colon cleanser cannot hurt & also the probiotics. The Dr. says he does not have any parasites.........2 days ago he showed me what he had wiped......pea green snot looking stuff.........

I take it your son must of had a colonscope with biopsys taken at the same time. Did they mention Crohns or Colitis? That would be my guess. Especially with the weight loss.

Sorry about your son's problem!!

The digestive system has many types of different bacteria (over 400 different kinds) that line the intestines from the stomach to the anus.

These various bacterii can get out of balance from many things like alcohol, too much salt or sugary food and of course meications like strong antibiotics such as flagyl. I think your son's digestive system is so out of balance that it just cannot process food or drink properly.

I don't think a Gastro Doctor is going to help him --- primarily because there is no tests that can be run to determine the correct amount of the many varied intestinal bacteria present or what is normal??

You may have to take him an Alternative Care type Doctor that is more able to diagnose problems by the symptoms--- like an Osteopathic Doctor or Natruapathic Doc.

I know you are worried and I certainly wish your son well ---Harry

These comments and suggestions are so helpful to at least my mental state....I have never thought of an osteopath...I wonder of insurance accepts them....He has had a colonoscopy, endoscopy with biopsy, Cscan of abdomen....they say no colitis or Chrones, but my neighbor had to have more than one colonoscopy to diagnose hs chrones. There is a holistic type pharmasist nearby that has been recommended by friends.....

Hey, it sounds like I'm experiencing what your son is going through... I have been drinking more and more since I turned 21 and just now I've starting having bright red blood in stools, Its happened like 3 times and I am so scared to go to the doctor. I am going to make an appt tomorrow... I think my bleeding is directly related to drinking, and it doesn't help that i have a horrible diet that consists on mostly bread and cheese, i smoke, and i go from constipation to diarreah. I really hope you and your son figure out what the problem is I'm also seeing a counselor on the 18th about my drinking...

Again, I thank anyone for suggestions or advice. Maybe my son doesn't have a life threatening disease ( I pray NOT), but his illness is changing his personality & is oh so depressing for both of us. I took the advice of Mztami & ordered OxyMega (colon cleanser) & Probiotic 11 & L Reuteri. He just started the latter after 6 days of colon cleansing. He was at home during that time (thank God), because of course the pain was worse & he spent much time in the bathroom. We just took him back to school yesterday & i am anxious to find out if the probiotic helps at all. Poor kid, his last year of college & he has to work (part time). I know others have it far worse.................but as a parent, I just want him well again. Our next dr. appontment is with the 3rd gastro specialist in 2 weeks. Is a colo-rectal dr. different than a gastroenterologist?

Yes, a co-rectal doctor/surgeon is a specialist in the colon to anus area and a surgeon. And, a gastroentologist is a specialist of the entire digestive system-- from the mouth to the anus.

The probiotic L Reuteri is the best probiotic supplement that I have ever used-- there is a web site about it if you want to read about it---www.reuteri.com

I wish your son well---Harry

I hope your son is doing better. I am a mother of two, and would do anything for my children. When they are sick, I wish it was me instead of them.

Also, do your own research and read about Parasites in the human body. All the problems they cause in the digestive system. I read where this person had went on vacation and came back severly ill. Went to 3 different doctors and they couldn't determine what was wrong. Long story short, the person was infested with parasites. I read that the test that doctors do, only test for 4 different parasites, when there are thousands. I would suggest you do your own research. Don't rely 100% on doctors.

Please keep us in touch on the progress of your son. Read about parasites in the human body too.

I have twin nephews and one of them was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at 13 - it was horrible - he lost 20 pounds was depressed - they ended up removing alot of his colon and he had a colostomy bag for about 3 months - it was just absolutely horrible - anyway after all of this he was not really any better. Well about 5 years later, his twin brother at 18 has now shown up with the same symptoms. I have begged them to seek Alternative treatment - which they did go to a naturopathist - and he is helping them both - it is expensive because none of it is covered by insurance, however their health is worth every penny!!!!

Sometimes it's difficult to find a Good Holistic / Alernative Care Doctor--- I go to one that is the in a Center for Occipational and Environmental Meicine. but he is also an MD.

I think Naturopatic Doctors are only licensed in 13 states so they are not covered by insurance --- mine isn't either and Osteopathic Doctors are not only chiropactors but many are trained as Holistic Doctors and some are also MDs!!

I am convinced my Alternatve Care Doctor saved my life and improved it's quality.

God Bless---Harry

Once again a huge disappointment from the medical profession........Yesterday the 3rd gastro specialist told my son that he probably had IBS or proctitis, but if the sigmoidoscopy that he will perform next week shows nothing..............then maybe it is PSYCHOLOGICAL!!!!!! His great amount of gas & belching is STRESS!!!!!!!! The massive amounts of mucous is NOTHING to be concerned with. You have a healthy son. Well I just laughed in disbelief of what i was hearing. Remember he has not felt "good" or "normal" in over 15 months. I guess i will have to start searching for a holistic doctor.

Apparently i don't have a healthy son....The biopsies showed he does not have proctitis but he does have prolapse...said it was from the straining.....he needs more fiber & metamucil 3 times a day.....if he doesn't get better then he would have to have surgery......we see the dr again 10/7 for another look...It just seems that something has caused his stomach problems & constant straining.....but the dr is insinuating that it has just become habit.......

Well it seems that my story has a happy ending.....Maybe i am an overreactive mother with an overreactive son....He has begun to feel better after using the metmucil 3 times a day. After 5 doctors and 1 1/2 year of dispair....I do like this doctor....he says that it was a vicious cycle of straining that caused the slight prolapse & that he must continue with alotta fiber & he may never need surgery. He had one polyp, a kind that never turns cancerous. No proctitis or collitis. It may have started with a stomach bug, food poisoning or just lack of fiber (college student). We go back in 6 months, but i am feeling optimistic that this might just be true. I have been reading this site for a long time & I know we r truly blessed. Thanks for all the feedback & concern.

Have you tried physilium husks - for the mucus i used to get they were fantastic and "mopped" everything up and made a stool pass through normal as opposed to loose or with undigested food. stopping the drinking is wise and a test for celiac too. the weight loss issue could be due to anxiety/depression due to this situation and i would also assume that your son is also suffering from a little IBS along with the proctitis. unfortunately the increase worry and anxiety only serves to make the situation worse. perhaps visiting the doctor and maybe some form anxiety medication could help. good luck
