Hi ladies,

I am a 29 year old single mom of 3 kids,(6 year old son and 16 month old twin girls) and I am having a vaginal hysterectomy on August 17th. I have had a lot of problems with bleeding the past six years and things only got worse after I had my girl's, now after many tests my Ob/GYN told me this is the last resort and we cannot avoid it anymore.

I was just wondering if any of you ladies could share your recovery experiences with me, I am worried about this because I am pretty much on my own with my kids and do not have much help. I have a babysitter staying with them for the 2 days I will be in the hospital and their dad is taking them for one night but after that I am on my own. I am just nervous about being able to pick my girl's up and if I will be able to care for them.

Any advice or feedback would be appreciated,

Thank you!

Amy

I'm no woman but my wife just had a partial with "vag" assist! She is 43. Her bleeding and cramping have been bad for years. 2 children both by C section with more stuff growing and attaching to her inside uterus, cervix and tube (1 only from prior tubal pregnancy) and Ovaries. All but 1 ovary came out. NO LIFTING MORE THAN 10 LBS. FOR AT LEAST 2 WEEKS!!! My wife did great and feels great now (5 weeks past) her second visit to Dr. is next Tuesday - Hopefully she will be released fully. She wanted to to more but we had to keep her slowed down. DO NOT RUSH THIS. GET MORE OUTSIDE HELP. YOU NEED THE DOWN TIME TO HEAL - INTERNALLY!!!! Hope you come out with flying colors...first day sucked...she came home second day and slowly got it going.

Pat,

I just wanted to thank you for your reply, it is always nice to hear a man's point of view. I will take your advice and try to get some more help, my ex-husband is not being very cooperative but maybe I can get help from family.

Thank you again and I am glad your wife is doing great!

First off.. yes, you will need more help for a whole lot longer than a day. I had a TAH/BSO 2 yrs. ago due to endometrial cancer, so I had a vertical abd. incision. Either way, the internal stitches and all the cutting etc. inside is much the same. It is major surgery. I'm not saying this to scare you, but to let you know what to expect. I was told no lifting of anything more than 5 lbs. for 6 weeks is the norm. There is a reason for that. You have to follow instructions or you risk complications when healing.

Why are they doing the hyst? Sometimes that makes a difference on how involved it will be. Have you gotten a 2nd opinion? I just got a 3rd opinion on some surgery I had scheduled for next week and ended up cancelling the whole thing. Thank god I did get that 3rd opinion. You want to make sure you don't second guess after the fact. Since I didn't have a choice about the hyst, it made it easier to deal with. But, everyone afterwards will question why they did this. Hysterectomy is a major surgery. You will have a long time healing. Some heal quicker than others, but I was told by many on a great website for hysterectomy support that it takes a full year to really feel totally back to normal. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask..I learned more about hysts than I ever wanted to!!! On the other hand..the benefits of never having those periods again are pretty terrific! Please plan on 2 weeks of help. You won't be able to drive for that long or pick your childeren up..what if something happened that you needed to? You risk alot..see if family can take turns taking the kids..can you go stay with family? I live alone and all my family is out of state..I know how difficult it can be!!

Hi Amy
I had a vaginal hysterectomy when I was 27 years old for cervical cancer. My youngest of 3 was 18 months old at the time. My mom lived out of state and took my youngest to keep for 2 weeks. I still had to hire a sitter for him for another 4 weeks. I was so weak I wasn't even able to pick up a 2 liter bottle of drink. It took longer than 6 weeks to recover and it took at least a year before I felt normal again.

I have had several surgeries since that time and it does take time to heal. I would strongly urge you to get all of the help you can. You don't want to have complications from doing to much to fast.

I hope for you all of the best.

Just curious, what final reason did your Dr. decide you needed a Hyster. for? Also, during all this time have you seen another Dr. or had a second opinion?

I also had a Hyster. at a very young age, 24. Soon after, another Dr. finally DX'd me with thyroid disease, which he said most likely was causing my ongoing bleeding! Needless to say, I was angry and sick about it!

I had 3 kids at the time, and didn't really plan for anymore, but when I did that, my future choices were permanently taken away.

I wish I had gotten a second opinion. Lots of insurance companies will require one nowadays before you have surgery anyway. JMHO

I had mine several years ago at age 34 I think I was. I am now 49. I had no help at all after the operation. I had 2 pets to look after at the time but never had children to care for too. Sitting down and bending were the hardest with the big incision on my stomach but other then that I had no troubles.

Pathorn, sounds you are really in tune with your wife. I wished more men were like that. :)
