That will vary some from child to child and depending on the age of the baby. I know my son started with 2 oz every 2 to 3 hours and as they get older they go longer and drink more. My son was on formula, he refused to have anything to do with breastfeeding and my pumping was shortlived with him not stimulating the production. My son started sleeping all night at about 2 months but he would have a bottle at 10:30 or 11 and then my husband would feed him a bottle at 5 a.m. when he got up for work and lay him back down to sleep. He stayed on 4 hour feedings for a while and the amt of formula would increase.

My DD is six weeks yesterday and is now during the night going about 4 hours with 4 oz. During the day she seems to want to eat every 3.5 hours with 4 oz. But she has started this once I learned that she is OK to sleep on her tummy. She is on formula. So she usually eats at 10:45pm and will wake up anywhere 2:30am - 3:00am and again at around 6:45 or so.

My DS is on formula and he is eating every 3 hours, 4 ounces. And he can barely make it 3 hours after 2 he is starting to ask for his bottle. He will be 6 weeks tommorrow. At night he goes down when ever he wants and lasts till about 12:30-1 and after that it is every 3 hours.

My DD has been doing this lately. We are only 2 hours after she has eaten and making more for her. I don't know what's wrong with her. We think she may need Soy.

InDueTime05 - could be, but maybe she is just hungry. My DS is constantly hungry. There are times that when he gets the bottle, you can hear his stomach growl as the first sallows go down. And he just had 4 ounces maybe 2 hours ago. He has been like this since day one. Always starving, he is growing very well though!! We always joke with him that we starve him because he gets very loud and demanding when he is hungry. Makes us think that he is always unhappy but really he is always hungry. I think if he could he would have the bottle constantly dripping into his mouth 24-7. If the formula where bothering her she would be crying while she eats or immediately after. Since that is when it goes through her stomach, I read this in a book some where.

2Fast- I know what you mean about their stomach growling when they start feeding.
I am breastfeeding, and Jack wants to eat every 3 hours during the day ( he is 12 weeks) At night, he just started (knock on wood) sleeping for longer than 3 hours. He eats around 10, goes down and wakes up around 3 or 4, and then is up every 2-3 hours to eat again. I also pump for my husband to give him a bottle at night, and he drinks about 3-4 oz, which isn't a lot for his age, but he's already 14 lbs, so I really don't think think that you can really listen and go by what other people do. When they stop drinking, they are full! I have heard that babies at this age can't technically overeat.
Just a note though, this made me so mad. I was talking to a lady in the doctors office the other day, and she told me to stuff him silly if I wanted him to sleep longer. She said thats what she did with all of her kids, and they slept better. Personally, that is so selfish. She said she fed her daughter 7 oz, at 2 weeks, every 2 hours, until she would almost throw-up, just to get her to sleep. Gross. :nono:

dizzygirl - that lady is nasty. No, I do not try stuffing DS before he goes to bed. DH suggested we offer him more, which we do, and DH tries to get him to take it but I told him if you force feed a baby they will only throw up. There is no point in doing it, why make your baby sick, they won't sleep then.

Anyway, my problem with DS is he will NOT turn down food. Everyone says he will stop when he is full. The other morning he went through 5.5 ounces and I stopped him. He doesn't complain when I take the bottle away but he just keeps eating if it is there. I was afraid he would eat till he threw up. Basically if he has had enough he will not complain if you take the bottle away but he would keep right on eating if you don't. I think he just likes the bottle in his mouth and does what it takes to have it there to suck on. Because sometimes he begs to eat and he gets the bottle and sits with it for an hour for just 4 ounces!! Which when he is really hungry takes in 20 mins.
