Eating disorders are related to both OCD and Borderline Personality Diroder, which are both cousins of Bipolar Disorder. I'm currently "suffering" from anorexia. I've had this for about 8 years now. IT flares up really bad during times of emotional distress for me.

Hi Kitty,
I don't know the answer to this question - if there is a connection - but I do have a serious compulsive eating problem - and was bulimic in my past days....badly when I was a teen and I have had sporatic episodes throughout my adult life. I have always seen the compulsive eating as my main issue and the bulimia as the only way I knew how to deal w/ it...although now I can see that the vomiting did bring me it's own sort of numbness/relief. I am eager to see if anyone else has these issues as well.

I used to vommit like that. It wasn't related to eating. But for a period of a few months anytime I was upset I would eat alot and make myself vomit just to get that relieved feeling. Because when you think about it, when you are sick and have the flu or something, as soon as you throw up you feel better and more relaxed. So yes, I did use it in that respect in the past.

I agree that eating disorders are more commonly linked to OCD because they're Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (OCSD) that have strikingly similar symptoms to true OCD. But, it is true that you can have both at the same time, although I would think it would be rare for someone who was bipolar to have an eating disorder and NOT have OCD...

I'm schizoaffective and have an eating disorder. I've had the ED for about 6 years and haven't been schizoaffective nearly that long. I don't have OCD. I've been tested for it but I deffinatly dont' have it.

I have had an ed for 17 years, ranging between anorexia, but mostly bullemia. I think it's bullemarexia. I was hospitalized multiple times between the ages of 14 and 22, but I am 35 now and haven't been in therapy or a hospital since. I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality disorder and put on a long term unit for a year. Obviously it didn't help. Over the years I have adapted my ed to my life, but now that I am older I am definitely suffering from the effects of the long term abuse of my body. 2 days ago, I went to see a Psychiatrist about anti depressants and he said they would not help me because I have Bipolar2, different then Manic Depressive, the manic episodes are not as out of touch with reality, as in Bi Polar1. I am in one of my manic phases now, barely eating, over exercising, keeping journals and logs of every single thing I do, overly structuring my self, and I am barely sleeping. So to answer your question, they are definitely related. It was a comfort to see that question. I need someone to talk to about all of this and I don't like the shrinks I've seen. He tried to prescribe me something called Lamictal, don't know what it really is, and told me I was basically untreatable.
What would you do?

Every med reacts differently to different people! Lamictal had to be the worst the drug i had ever been on! I was on it for 4 months. I got worse, when i was on it! For other's, it has been a miracle-----of course, these drugs are all trial and error! Lamictal is used for epilepsy......i think recently they have started to use it to treat bipolar. My X pdoc told me it was a "miracle drug" not for me! She wouldnt take me off it, regardless i was going absolutely insane. So, i went off----stop seeing her....and i am doing a little better.....being off it, for the time being??????

BKFREE,

I have recently been switched from Neurontin to Lamictal. I was on both at the same time in the past, maybe 3 years ago. Neurontin was no good for me because it made me gain weight because it triggers a pleasure sector of your brain telling you to eat more even when your stomach hurts. So now I'm being put on Lamictal and what my doctor told me (not psych doc or therapist but other mental health care specialist I'm seeing) he told me that alot of the times Lamictal is what is chosen for patients who dont want weight gain from a mood stablizer or have gain weight from a past mood stabilizer because it makes you lose weight. The only thing is, it take almost 2 months for the Lamictal to have a significant effect. I would give it a try. I cant tell you how its helping with me weight because I'm still on the Neurontin until the Lamictal kicks in.

Schizoaffective Disorder is a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Even though people who have bipolar I can become psychotic and exhibit schizophrenia-like symptoms, they go away when their mania is stabilized. In schizoaffective disorder, however, the person's delusions and hallucinations are still present when they're experiencing a normal mood.

I have Bipolar Disorder and I also have an eating disorder. Like someone else mentioned it is another cousin, or side effect of Bipolar Disorder or another Major Disorder, or a reaction to another major illness. My eating disorder started when I was 13 and I'm now 35. I take drugs to help calm it down, however, due to flare ups with the Bipolar Disorder, I still suffer bouts of the eating disorder though I take meds for it. It is something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life the pdoc has told me.

Hello, everyone.

I have a long line of dx: BP, OCD, PTSD, DID,

and an eating disorder. ED originated when I was approx 14 (36 now) started out anerexia and turned into bulimia which I still struggle with.

M T said it's probably r/t the OCD. But the OCD is a component of the BP. Confusing. Then, I read in a book that alters can have specific dxs including ED. And I notice I have periods where I don't have it, and periods where I do (so that could be true).

So I don't know where or how it is r/t to what. All I know is I struggle.

Best wishes,
Stolen

My neurolgist prescribed Nuerontin for me for Nerve pain due to Facet Joint syndrome that I have,(problems with my spine)I totally freaked out on Neurontin at a very low dose100-300mgs, and I couldn't take it . I went to a shrink who told me I had Bi polar 2 andprescribed me Lamictal. I am way to terrified to try i because of the reaction I had to the neurontin. I am extremely sensitive to drugs. I am doing better now without drugs, just legal herbs and supplements and I feel like a brand new me. I just don't want to be a guines pig anymore.
