HI everyone,i have a problem which is quite embarassing and i hope someone can help me..
I am quite dark haired and have noticable hair above my lip,i have tried lots of things and nothing realy helps.I used to bleach it but it was noticable blonde aswell so then i tried hair removal cream and it grows back very fast so i got it waxed which i didnt think was very effective so now even though i know its really bad thing for a girl todo but i started shaving it which i the only thing that really keeps it away ...i really dont want to do this anymore and i have started getting interesrd in premanebt hair removal like electrolysis or laser hair removal..
I have heard that this can change the clour of your skin in the area..is this true?
Has anyone had it done that can tell me how effective it is ?? thanks tamsynn :)

Neither electrolysis nor laser hair removal will change the color of your skin if the treatments are done by a well trained technician.

Hi pamela, isnt laser permanent aswell? well anyway do you have to get the electroylsis done regularly or just a few times and thats it for ever? also how long do you have to let the hair grow for before you get this done?
Thanks, Tam

Hi Tamsynn, Yes i think laser is permanent but i do know that the hair has to be dark to treat it. With electrolyisis the hair can be dark or light. They can treat the hair as soon as it is visible with electrolyisis, and it may need to be treated a couple of times before it is gone.

Hey Tam,
It may be that you have too much male hormones. Maybe you should make an appointment with an endocrinologist. There are medications to help you regulate your hormones which may clear up your problem altogether. Good luck!

I agree that electrolysis is the best method for permanent hair removal. It will take several sessions, but eventually the hairs will cease coming back. You can have a clear, smooth, presentable appearance.
The upper lip is one of the most sensitive areas of the body for electrolysis. The technician is permitted by law to perform only a short session for each upper lip treatment. You can return as often as you want to work on new areas. When the treated areas have cleared completely, you can begin on them again.
I've had electrolysis for my bikini area, and it worked great. I'm having some troublesome facial hairs treated recently.

{removed} I don't think the technician can do peach fuzz. I think she must be able to actually see the hair. If you have fine, light-colored type of facial hair, there might be some difficulty in targeting them to remove them.
I have light, fine facial hair, also. I have several on my chin that have become coarse, although light-colored, and are growing longer than the surrounding hairs. My electrolysist zapped them a couple of times, but I'll still have to go back again. In the meantime, I am snipping them with the scissors.
You do have to return for several treatments of the same hairs. Each treatment, the hairs will become more fine and lighter and will eventually stop coming in. I do not go to one of those big clinics that do all kinds of cosmetic treatments. The lady I go to works out of her home and is remarkably reasonable. I think the last time I went, I paid $11 for about 30 minutes. The time prior, I had gone for about an hour and it was about $20. I've heard of some outrageous charges at the large clinics for electrolysis treatments.
When hairs are zapped, the tiny pore forms a tender scab which disappears in a matter of days, and the temporary light scars disappear completely in a couple of weeks. The area cannot be worked on again until it has completely cleared. You can have new areas or healed areas done while the already treated areas are clearing. I keep an aloe vera plant in my house to apply fresh aloe vera to the areas. The aloe vera is cooling, soothing and expedites healing. You can never again shave a hair that has been treated by electrolysis, as it will encourage the hair to grow stronger and thicker, thus defeating the purpose of the treatments.
You asked if it takes alot of time. You can schedule appointments as you need them. You can go for 5 or 30 minutes, 1 or 2 hours, 1 day a week or 5 days a week, it's up to you. If you can find someone who is affordable, you can go longer and more often.

It may be that you have too much male hormones. Maybe you should make an appointment with an endocrinologist. There are medications to help you regulate your hormones which may clear up your problem altogether. First of all, look at the relative lengths of your index and fourth (ring) fingers. If your ring fingers are longer than your index fingers, then you've probably had enough testosterone exposure before birth to sensitize you for male-type facial hair. If that's the case, then while you may be able to reduce the amount of testosterone currently in your system, it may be something of a struggle. For myself, I've settled for shaving and I've never regretted it. I use a top quality men's electric razor.

Both laser and electrolysis can provide permanent results. The hair must be dark for laser to be effective.
For electrolysis, the hair needs to be long enough for the electrologist to remove with a pair of forceps after the hair has been treated.
For laser, the tech will either shave the area, or instruct you to shave prior to treatment.
If the hair is only on your upper lip, it isn't a hormone imbalance.
There is no law restricting how long an electrologist may work on the upper lip, or any area for that matter. It is safest to not work more than 30 mins. in a 7 day period on the upper lip.
Peach fuzz can be treated with electrolysis. It can be seen with the proper lighting and magnification.
I would be very skeptical of anyone charging too little for electrolysis. Even someone working from their home. Licensing, continuing education, disposable needles, gloves, and all the other supplies necessary to provide proper treatment can not be done charging $11 for 30 mins.
Scabbing on the face is rare, and should be addressed with your electrologist. It is not normal. Scabbing on the body is normal.
You CAN shave hair that has been treated with electrolysis. Shaving will NOT change the hair. It will NOT cause the hair to grow strong, thicker or anything else. This was proven in 1927 by Dr. Mildred Trotter.
Tweezing or waxing is not allowed while having electrolysis treatments. If you need to do something in between treatments, you can shave or clip the hair all you like, your electrologist only needs a day or 2's worth of growth.
AllysHeart, I really think you need to consult with other electrologists in your area. If you are scabbing on your face, you are not receiving proper treatment. Make sure your electrologist is using sterilized needles. Ask about gold and insulated needles, as you may be reacting to the nickel in the stainless steel needle.

Hello, Choice. Everything I have stated is accurate. I've been a client of this lady for 22 years. Yes, it is possible to have professional electrolysis for the prices I quoted. The problem is that people are majorly ripped off everyday by the establishments that perform beauty treatments of all types. Electrolysis does not have to be expensive to be safe or effective.
I've had my bikini area completely cleared over the years, and I return about twice a year to clear annoying facial hair or fine bikini line hairs. I am completely satisfied with the lady who does my electroylsis in her home, and I have total confidence in her professionalism. She has as many customers as she can handle, men and women.
Anywhere a hair is removed, there will be light scabbing, whether it's bikini area, legs or face. The facial scabs last only a day or two, and are very delicate. The sizes of the scabs are commensurate with the thickness of the hairs being removed.
My technician always told me never to shave an area where she has worked. As she removes the hairs, they become much finer over time, until they eventually cease growing back. If the hairs are shaved after they have become very fine, they will begin to darken and become more coarse, thus reversing the progress which was made.

Hiya - I too have suffered from nasty facial hair since I was about 13. I bleached my upper lip and waxed my chin/sides. It got too much to keep up and I d iscovered laser. I went for my first treatment $500 for my whole face practically - and it was wonderful. it wasn't such a pleasant experience, but its been 6 weeks already and no sign of hair. I used to have to bleach and wax every week. I keep waiting for the next hairs to come in so we can zap them out :D
