Has anyone here had EMDR done to them? And if so, how did it affect you? I'm getting it done next week.

I've had EMDR, but it didn't do anything for my anxiety disorders. However, it was marvelous for the emotional trauma of my father. I can still remember everything that happened, but it doesn't make me quite as upset, and I can move on with my life. Still, my EMDR therapist tried many times to get rid of my OCD and panic, but to no avail. That's what CBT's for... ;)

Ok, becuase the doctor that I am seeing thats doing it is really good, and has a really good success rate. And I know one thing that gives me such anxiety is what my father thinks of me. And I have a troubling past with my father as well. So hopefully when thats all cleared up I wont have so much anxiety about my father and grow more independent. THe way he was explaining it to me is that all these different pieces of traumatizing events that get stored dysfunctionally in the brain. And what EMDR does is basically (using computer terms) defragments your brain make it easier to process the traumas that were once impoosible to deal with. Thats how I understood it anyway.

That's a pretty good understanding of it. Basically, what happens, is that the EMDR allows you brain to reprocess the traumatic situation during REM sleep. After a few nights' rest, the trauma is lessened. I'm sorry to hear that you've had fatherly troubles, too. I hope your EMDR is successful, but it sounds like it will be! The only thing is, if you have sleep apnea, it might not work. My mom got EMDR done, but she told me that it didn't do anything for her. I think this is because, at the time, she had undiagnosed sleep apnea, and she was always waking up because of the stopped breathing and she never went into REM sleep... Good luck!
